New Years in Amsterdam!??!

Hello Knowledgable People,

I am thinking about going to Amsterdam for New Years. Does anyone know anything about this -- is it CRAZY cold? Is there good event-y stuff going on? How many days should one budget for the trip? how hard is it to find accomodations?

THANKS,
meri

Normal temperature around New Year's is around freezing at night, a few degrees above freezing during the day. However, it could be much warmer or colder than that as the weather in Amsterdam is very changeable and impossible to predict. The days between Christmas and New Years are a fun time to be in Amsterdam. Many locals have time off from work and the city is busy with shoppers, theatre go-ers, restaurant and bar go-ers , etc. Also a very popular time for tourists so book accommodation (long) before you travel. At midnight on Dec 31, everybody is on the street with friends/family, champagne and fireworks and the city changes into one big party.
After January 1 there always seems to be a big hangover. People go back to work, nobody has any money left for fun stuff, and the city becomes sleepy for a few weeks until the January pay checks arrive!
