New Year's Eve in Vienna
 

My husband and I will be spending New Year's Eve in Vienna. I am looking for a restaurant recommendation for the evening.

We'll certainly enjoy being out on the streets for the celebration but, as I will be 6 months pregnant, I will not have my full party hat on.

We'd like to spend much of our evening with a nice, but not outrageously expensive, dinner--perhaps $100 total (saving lots on our wine budget of late!). Unfortunately, NYE tends to bring out overpriced prix-fixe menus and difficult reservations so we're hoping for some Fodorite insight. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

In your condition avoid the Stephansplatz area in the later evening...many crazy fireworks being set off in the crowds. Better by the Rathaus. For a nice meal, try the Witwe Bolte:

As with all restaurants, reserve early.
We particularly liked Restaurant Englehardt out in Heiligenstadt...nice place which overlooks Vienna. At midnight the Blue Danube plays and everyone waltzes. You can watch the fireworks explode over Vienna from here. Few tourists there too. It is a bit more $$ than you state, but very much worth the money.

I can recommend a nice restaurant, not in the city center, where you can get an excellent seven course dinner for EUR 55,- excluding drinks:

We celebrated last years NYE there and it was very very nice and "gemütlich" !

What's the normal dress attire for NYE here?

The normal attire is casual. Jacket without tie, or just a nice woolen sweater ...

The only exception are high end restaurants, who require jacket and tie.

And at the formal NYE balls you should have a tuxedo / evening gown.

OTOH, at the most places, you will find that people dress up a little bit for NYE, but there will be no long gowns or tuxedos in the restaurants. Generally people dont dress up as much as maybe 30 years ago.
