New years Eve 2005

Some friends and I are looking for somewhere to spend NYE in Europe this year. We have done Rome, anyone have any suggestions?

Or the granddaddy of them all, Edinburgh.

Perhaps I should rephrase the question. My wife and I spent NYE in Rome and enjoyed the music, fireworks and the dancing in the piazza del Popola. We would like to go somewhere else in Europe where people celebrate the New Year. What experiences have you had for example?

Definitely Edinburgh

What Sheila & Gardyloo have said. If people get into New Years Eve celebrations more than the folks in Scotland, I don't know where!

What's Edinburgh like? I heard it was cancelled this past New Years because of the snow? Anybody been there? ((b))

I'm only 200 miles from Scotland, the same from London. When we in the UK say Europe we really mean Europe minus the UK. Sorry for the confusion. Regarding the celebrations being cancelled because of snow, it would take more than snow to stop the Jocks from enjoying Hogmanay.

Hi toledo,

NYE in Amsterdam is celebrated with a large outdoor concert and tons of fireworks all night long.

Thousands of people from all over Europe on the streets celebrating. Not as subdued as Rome.

I vote Amsterdam also. The Dutch people LOVE NY's and they throw really good parties - anywhere in Holland there will be fireworks and fun. Enjoy!

Budman, Edinburgh's Street Party and fireworks were cancelled two years ago because of high wind. The weather was truly miserable, I was there. This past Hogmanay, the weather was fine and everything went off as planned, including new, high-wind-proof fireworks.

toledo, if you decide on Edinburgh, be sure to get there by Dec. 29 because some of the best events take place before Hogmanay. (Hogmanay is New Year's Eve in Scotland) Later in the year their web site will be up and running at www.edinburghshogmanay.com. Also, the street party is VERY crowded, even though the organizers limit the number of tickets.

We did Paris for New Years last year and it was a memorable experience. The main festivities I suppose are on the champs elysees. People are everywhere with Champagne and the fireworks go off at Place de la Concorde, right at the end of the Champs.
My husband and I opted for the Eifel Tower however, thinking that the fireworks would go off from there. They did not but the Parisian teens did go off. They were throwing fireworks under the blocked off Tower and the police would chase them away and then tear gas the area. We ended up having to walk about 1.5 miles out of the way to get to our hotel which was very close to the Tower. In hindsight, it was an interesting experience but at the time dreadful. We loved Paris at that time of year and the fireworks were great. I bet they look great down the lighted Champs elysees

I've heard Vienna throws a good NYE party...

My best NYE experience was in Brugge, Belgium...but that's because we had a 7-course (5.5 hr) gourmet beer dinner at Den Dyver.

A couple of years ago I spent NYE in Lisbon. They had a great party going in the main square with good music. At midnight they put on a fantastic show with fireworks and lasers. It was a slightly unruly crowd and we got sprayed with champagne, but it was so much fun!!

Hi, we are going to Rome for NYE this year and we thought as you have already been you could tell us about the hotspots and maybe somewhere nice to eat etc? Any info would be good - thank you!

Hi, Jade and Andrew. Our good poster sanditravelnut was in Rome last NYE. If you post this question on a seperate thread it will surely catch her eye, as well as our other experts. Good luck.

Sydney, of course - it's a little to the south of Europe - but does a spectacular New Year!
