New Year's DAY in Amsterdam?
 

My husband and I will be in Amsterdam over the New Year's holiday and are wondering if there's anything to do on New Year's Day?

I've read that everything is pretty dead, but are there any Jan 1 traditions we can take part in? Should we take a train to another town? Hoard food on the 31st so we don't starve?

the ann frank museum is open on new years day. lots of other restaurants were open too. didnt seem as deserted as NYE. make sure to get tickets for the ann frank museum online. it will save you an hour in line! i believe the trams were running. it will be a slow day but its nice to walk around and take in the pretty sights.

Phew - that's good to hear! Thanks, Summagold... we'll definitely save the Ann Frank house until NYD (and order tickets ahead of time)... great tip.

Other museums are closed on new year's day, and the city is slow starting up after the festivities the night before, but the shops will be open and so will restaurants.
Public transport will be running as normal.

Sorry hetismij... I should've listened to that nagging voice that said, "doesn't Anne Frank have an E?" That nagging voice is always right!

No worries about pub transport... we're staying near the AFH, so we're hoping to do a lot of walking (in the boots I can't seem to find). :-)

Do you like swimming in cold water? The "nieuwjaarsduik" is a Dutch tradition on new year's day. Respect if you participate, I've never been brave enough. Featured in several Dutch seaside towns. I think Zandvoort, close to Amsterdam, also has one each year
