New Years 2004 in Rome

I am going to be in Rome for New Years this year - Dec 29-Jan 1. I am windering where in Rome is the best place to be for this holiday. Dinner? Clubs? Streets? Entertainment? etc. I am going to staying near the Spanish Steps, but anywhere in the city wold be fine.

I'll be there on the 31st, too. My plan is to walk over to Piazza del Popolo. I hear that's the big public celebration point. Bands, fireworks, etc. Just hoping it's not too cold. Though it'll have to be better than Toronto.

A LA friend of mine was in the Piazza del Poplo for 2004 NYE and got hit with a bottle - seems that it's common practice for breakable objects to be thrown.

Like throwing items out of the windows to "clean out" for New Years.
Ouch, but it is true.

Probably the biggest thing in Rome New year's Eve is going to a Ristorante for the Evening......and I mean all evening.

They all (pick one) have specials, food, wine...the works.

Plan early! We went out a little late and ended up in a Chinese Ristorante on New Year's Eve which we thought was going to be a fiasco. Turns out we met some Med Students from Milano at the next table and after they found out we were from the U.S. the party began. We ended up in there for hours singing some old U.S. Pop hits with them and drinking several gallons of wine. It was a hoot.

Having said that, I think it is best to plan ahead, find a Ristorante you like and ask them ahead of time what their New Year's Eve plans are and make reservations.
