Alan,
This will be my 3rd time to Paris, & I have purchased either the 3 or 5 day pass (LaCarte), for each trip, in the USA before
leaving on vacation. No matter where you purchase it, the value is always worth while, & the convenience of using them is also
a plus. But if you are asking about purchasing in USA versus in Paris, I do it in the USA, even though there is always a small
handling charge, for a few different reasons, most leading to convenience. By purchasing them (need to buy for 3 people) in advance
that is 1 bill out of the way & paid for before the trip -- there will be enough hotel bills after the trip. Another reason is, We only
have a limited amount of time in Paris, sometimes the lines to purchase passes are long in Paris -- sometimes not. But I don't want
to waste time in Paris for that -- I will already have them in hand.
As for Metro, we buy the CARNET -- packet of 10 tickets when we get there, even though sometimes we even have to buy a second carnet
because we used the first pack. But while there we usually elicit some type of help from hotel personal, & since they all use the metro at
one time or another, when we leave, we keep the 1 ticket to get us to the train station & give any leftover tickets to the hotel
person that helped us, as a type of tip. So far, they have appreciated that.
