New Malden / Korean food?
 

I was just reading that New Malden has a growing Korean community. I am a big fan of Korean barbeque, and I would be willing to travel quite far to experience the best Korean food in London. Could anyone suggest any restaurants with the best barbeque or comment on New Malden itself? (Not to mention how to get there.) Thanks in advance!

Are you really interested in Korean food, or do you just have a thing about their barbeques?

I think Yeon-Ji (8942 7184) and the far swisher Asadal (8942 2334) are the only New Malden places that do barbeques. Hamgipak (8942 9558), Jee's (8942 0682) and You-Me (8715 1079) offer more typical and interesting Korean food.

More centrally, and aimed at Korean students rather than families, Han Kang in Hanway St, Myung Ga (Kingly St, W1) and Ran (Gt Marlborough St) include barbeques.

As you probably know, we don't go in for "best xxx in town" here. As with most other worthwhile things in life, Korean food is too complex and interesting to produce trite scorecards.

As for giving you directions for getting to New Malden, that does rather require us to know where you're starting from.

Thanks for responding. I like Korean food in general but I really do enjoy doing barbeque at my table. But I'd be up for trying the other places you mentioned if those are more interesting.

I have to admit that although I love food I've never eaten Korean food (no Korean restaurants anywhere near my part of England!) but I looked up Korean cuisine in my very reliable Hardens Food Guide. It came up with Young Bin, 3 St Alphage Street EC2 7638 9151 (near the Barbican). The Guide raves up its all you can eat lunchtime buffet. Am afraid I can't tell you anymore about this, and I don't know if they do a barbeque, but Hardens has never yet let me down.

From Westminster, get to Waterloo mainline station (you could probably walk there via Hungerford Bridge), and take a train from the mainline station to New Malden. But it would be worth checking which is the nearest station (maps on www.yell.com) - and check the signs at Waterloo carefully to make sure you get the right train.

We had Korean food last night--I had Jiri, a seafood and vegetable stew in clear broth, and So-gogi Tang-soo-youk, the Korean version of Chinese sweet and sour beef. Of course, the dozen or so obligatory little dishes of various kimchis and appetizers that come with every meal.

Washed down with a nice, big bottle of Kirin Ichiban.

Mmmmmmmm.
