New Luggage Screening Laws

I am definitely going to keep a detailed packing list from now on.

I refuse however , to photograph everything - I am not going to pay for film & developing ( nope - no digital camera yet) Unless it is a very special specific item - which I probably wouldn't take along anyway.

I agree that theft happened before, but at least we could pretend that our locks helped, and we had a reasonable expectation that our bags SHOULD not be opened. Now , basically we are being told that the reasonable expectation is that they WILL be opened, and not in our presence.

Go ahead and search them- I just want to be there.

Hi Eva--

You're going to hate me for saying this, but in addition to recommending that we do not lock our suitcases, the TSA also advises us not to overstuff.
I don't think the screeners will feel guilty if they can't restuff it.

Howard--

I agree with you. It's annoying, it's uncomfortable, but it still won't stop me from going--I'll just take longer trips to get more bang for the buck

Cheers

Syrin: I do not stuff my bag. I pack it with great care so I can get everything in that I need. If it was all taken apart, I doubt they would take such care to repack it. As far as the ziplocks - they are great and I always use them for the return flight because I don't care then how wrinkled everything is and I can make room for all the cool things I've bought. When you suck all the air out of those bags your clothes get all wrinkled, no way around it.

Interesting comments.

I never thought a lock would keep out a thief or other wrongdoer but I hoped that I would at least notice that someone had tampered with my bags.

In any case, I thought the lesson of 9-11 was that the most potentially dangerous thing on board a plane is the plane itself, not what might or might not be in the luggage. As for screening for anything other than large knives or guns, who are the authorities kidding. A trained terrorist could threaten/kill most people with his necktie, if not his bare hands. I don't object to increased security measures, but I do object to the idea that if a procedure is inconvenient and expensive enough, it must somehow magically increase security. Oh yes, I'll still fly, but I have no illusions.

to MHS-- NO ,previously all bags WERE NOT automatically scanned-- Only a portion as the time allotted would not allow ALL bags to be x-rayed..

Now they are telling us that they are z raying 90 % and 10 pct will be done by the dogs---

However, if you happen to fly out of a smaller airport that does not have the money for the X ray equipment for each area, they will hand search and use dogs.....

OK, how secure would you feel with unlocked bags on the following itinerary: LAX to JFK. JFK to Amsterdam. Amsterdam to Bucharest. Me, I don't feel comfortable at all. I don't know whether to chance it with locks getting broken by TSA or theft from plastic tag locks. Any thoughts?

I have hard luggage so I can't use sip ties. I was thinking of buying those space bags that I see on tv - that way my clothes fit in the suitcase (I am an overstuffer) and they may be more secure...unless they streal the entire bag. Has any tried the bags? Anyone with hard luggage have any suggestions??
