New Italy destination

Can anyone recommend a town near FCO in Rome which has great views, history and a hotel with a pool? We are 4 people (2 adults and 2 children).

Fiumicino. It's very near FCO.

How "near" is near? Will you have a car or rely on public transportation or taxis? One night or longer? Budget?

Fiumicino is certainly close to FCO but rather charmless IMO. One night is fine, but I wouldn't want to stay any longer. You will find more hotels with a pool there, however.

I like Bracciano on the lake of the same name. It's perhaps an hour's drive from FCO, has a castle and nice views of the lake.

It might also be helpful to know more about your itinerary. Is this your first or last destination in Italy? Where would you be going before/after?

Thank you for the replies. This is the tail end of our trip which will be 6 days in Rome, 7 in the Amalfi Coast region. We will not have a car. We just wanted to get closer to the airport and see something else. An hour away from FCO could be a challenge without a car but I enjoy the idea of a lake and castle. Budget is under $400 US a night.

Oh and we are planning on 1-2 nights. We have a 9:35am flight out.

With a flight that early, I'd just stay in Fiumicino.

It might have been nice to go to the AC first and Rome last. You could have stayed in Rome through the last night and eliminated a hotel change.

Fiumicino?.

The town of Fiumicino is really dreary and not anywhere to which I want to return. FCO is about a 30 minute cab ride (around 50 e) from the center of Rome. With the timing of your flight outbound, you would need to be at the airport some 3 hours prior to the flight.

Bracciano is certainly an option but you would need to increase travel time the morning of your departure. Rome center city hotels would be fine.

Flights out of FCO leave from the far end of the airport, along with flights to Israel.

Thank you for that insight. I have really been struggling with this for a whole 4 days. Not a big deal in the grand scheme of things I know. I just want to have a great last night. Our last night in Dublin sort of sucked because of where we stayed and the weather. I want to go out on a bang.
I don't want to rent a car so we will be dependent on taxi's or car service.
Any recommendations for a kick hiney 4star hotel for a last night in Italy? We are staying the first 7 days at the Albergo di Senato and then will have 7 days at the Covo in Positano. This is our last trip for a few years and I am ok with $500-$600 US per night.

No reason you couldn't stay at the Albergo del Senato for the last night... But did you see my comment in your other thread about starting with the Amalfi Coast and ending in Rome?

We enjoyed staying in Fiumicino for two nights. There are many excellent restaurants including Pascucci which is one of the best in Lazio and which a may have spelled wrong.

Personally I would consider staying in Fiumicino a kind of let-down, the kind I never wanted when leaving Europe after a nice visit. The last couple of times I visited Rome from the USA and stayed at my favorite hotel, the Modigliani, I got up at 5 am and took a taxi the hotel ordered for me to the airport. That way, even though I was dead tired, my last memories of Rome were of dawn rising. Way better than some dreary hotel near the airport.

Hi Jean
Yes I saw it. We really want to start our trip in Rome. We love doing the city first and then the relaxing part. Thanks for the idea.

May the fates be kind to me for this grand statement, but I don't think traffic would be bad that time of day. Rome isn't so far.

Here is what I wrote (in 2009) about our early flight--hotel Raphael (very nice) ordered our cab: Cab to airport picked us up at 6:50 and we were at the airport at 7:15. We pass St. Paul outside the wall. “How did we miss that?” Taxi left us at wrong terminal but it was a short walk to the correct one. Loooonnng check-in line for our 8:55 flight (it is 7:40). We actually make it with 20 minutes to spare.

We were 2 hours early for the flight not 3. I dare say things are more automated 10 years later but Italy can be quirky? Please share your experience with all this.
