I hardly dare mention 1966.
Or, come to think of it, 1940. |
1966 was in colour.
|
No it wasn't.
The shop I was working in that afternoon sold televisions. They were all b/w. "They think it's all over" was said (if anything Wolstenholme mouthed could be called "saying") over an utterly grey picture. Whatever experiments thge Beeb were running into colour at the time, they didn't extend to having colour TV cameras at Wembley. |
I think BBC colour broadcasts started in 1969. Don't confuse our history with that of our ex-colony across the pond. Most of our history did take place in black and white, theirs has mostly been in colour.
I admit the moon landings were in black & white, but that was just to confuse us because we all know it never happened and was filmed in a studio. |
Yes indeedy our first color tellie was in 1960 and we were a bit late - watched the Rose Parade in color and invited B&W TV'd neighbors in for the show.
I remember getting our first TV that's how old i am |
Now let's see how good the memory is.
We had a colour TV in the shop for the 1967 Wimbledon, which was shown in colour on some transmitters, including Winter Hill which was the one that really counted. In mid-1968 we had a fierce squabble in our Junior Common Room about renting a colour TV in time for the (October) Mexico City Olympics. The couch potatoes won, but on the condition the set shouds be moved somewhere thgat wouodn't distract us from boozy squabbling. This was the first event for which UK TV rental companies actively promoted the opportunity to see something in colour. |
The colour footage of Nobby dancing and the Queen handing Bobby the cup is from the cinema film of the event.
My dad was there. |

That and getting us to pay for the wet Albania they are creating up there. |

Once upon a time, the Scotch used to boast they'd invented the Empire.
Now they're boasting they pretended political correctness. What a dismal way to end up <i>"Bet you didn't know that" Fact of the Day </i> That 'X' inside the HSBC logo is meant to be a Cross of St Andrew. Back in the days when Scotland stood proud, the mighty Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank recruited only "lads o' pairts" from Scotland. Senior management thought onoy they could out-negotiate the wily Cantonese and Shanghainese who were HSBC's customers. Now they prefer even girls from Gloucestershire |
What's wrong with the odd girls?
|
Well you wouldn't want odd people working in a bank, would you? Think who they might lend your money to.
People who'd pay it back, for example. Or people who could afford the mortgage. Then where would we all be? In Oddington, probably (just on the Gloucestershire side of the border from our place, since you're asking) |
Well in about 1982 a mate of mine in HSBC, in Honkers, and an international Rugby player, had to get authorisation before he wed. Word was that since he was not yet 28 it was unlikely but he got through because of his skills on the pitch.
