New Athens Airport to open on March 28
I came across this URL posted by Jan Bergtun www.islandstrolling.com on rec.travel.europe and alt.travel.greece and thought it might be helpful.
http://athensnews.dolnet.gr/athweb/n...=01&m=A03&aa=3
Regards, Walter
Regarding the airport and transportation, I found this article. Apparently with the Athens traffic congestion, and the new roads not built yet, taxi drivers are estimating a 2 hour ride to the city center.

http://www.iht.com/articles/12501.html
Does anybody know an alternate way to get into Athens, other than taxi?

Has the new Airport been moved. When I was in Athans 2 1/2 years ago it took about 1/2 hour and $5.50 from the airport to the old town(can't remember the name for it) and the same on return. I did not arrive or depart during rush hour. I can imagine that it could take much longer then.
I assume there will be bus routes entering the new airport. The town is SPATA, not Sparta. Outside the airport, there are 2 bus routes 304 and 321, running to Athens, but you have to transfer at the Military Academy, which is their last stop, to either A5 or r5, to the Acadamius Street Bus terminal in Athens. Or from that Military Academy, you can take the Metro into Athens. Complicated and with luggage, I don't know?
