It's a very good and interesting question, and I am eager to see some of the answers. But I am curious how long is your trip? If it is less than 17 days, then you're talking about doing a lot of driving - - though i realize that I am doing a lot of guessing about
your itinerary.

But more to the point - - if you're traveling for MORE than 17 days, did you look into the comparative cost of a lease? Might be cheaper than an extended rental.

Best wishes,

Rex
Hi Rich,
I am an American living in London for a 3 year assignment.. My British car has a navigation system .( I had one on my car in the US, too and I find the systems just to be OK)
What I have had to get used to while driving over here is that since the streets are so close together in Central London it can sometimes be a challenge for me and the GPS. <g>
I enter in my destination point and the system figures out how to get me there but sometimes the turns come up so quickly and traffic is so conjested that I have to drive around the block and start over( not that London has many 'blocks' as we know them in the US.<G> ) I have better luck driving outside the city.

you will LOVE it. I had it on the Mercedes I rented in Germany, and when I visited friends in Munich (had not been to their new place yet) I just punched in the address and it took me there.

thanks for the input. i'm renting a 4-door mercedes from hertz. after spending what seemed like a week one afternoon trying to figure out how to get out of milan and find lake como, i figured it might be a smart move. thanks.

The car we rented on our last trip had GPS-it was great. Hubby and I didn't have one argument about directions and we drove 1500 miles (not km)! We found our way to places that we hadn't been able to locate on the paper map. We plan to take it as an option on the next trip and possibly get it on the next vehicle we purchase.
