Never been to Rome, one simple question
Okay, there are no simple questions when it comes to travel. If there is ONE spot I want to be staying near while in Rome, what is it?
My wife-to-be and I enjoy dining, seeing major sites that need to be seen but won't spend too much time on the non-majors (more into the coliseum and that stuff)...we love wine bars, shopping, people watching, all of that good stuff. I hear so many of these "neighborhoods" being thrown out there but is there that one spot that if you enjoy all of this you must be? Thanks...I know this is COMPLETELY subjective, but I am going to take the first couple of opinions and book something based on that by 5pm today EST. Thanks again! |
Patheon/Piazza Navona/Campo de Fiori
Somewhere between the three--the are only about 10 minutes apart in the historic center. |
This is just my preference, but I would say the Pantheon.
Piazza Navona and Campo dei Fiori areas are also good. franco has posted a thread here about what he considers the best places to stay in Rome, here's the link... http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...p;tid=34792021 |
When I'm on vacation, I don't like to spend my time going back and forth or just getting to things I want to see or experience. I agree with the Pantheon/Piazza Navona suggestion. We spent our short time in Rome across from the Pantheon and think it is the perfect location. Have fun!

I agree with the above.

Near Trevi is good also if hotels in historic area are booked or too expensive. Easy walk to all of the above.

Jliven, what did you ever decide to do about your honeymoon? How long are you staying in rome?
|
Pantheon/Piazza Navona/Campo de Fiori areas.
BTW, this is one spot. |
Are there any nice hotels in the Largo Argentine area? It is a faily short walk to the Pantheon/Campo dei Fiori area, but a bit closer to the Spanish steps, etc. area. It also has convenient taxi stands.
We stayed just off the Camp dei Fiori. We walked everywhere, except to the Galleria Borghese. |
I'm sorry missypie, but the Pantheon is much closer to the Spanish Steps than Largo Argentina.
|
You're right - just looked at a map. But I guess it's kind of immaterial; the Pantheon is about 4 blocks closer, but neither are close to the Spanish Steps. I guess my mind set was to catch a cab there, which one can easily get at the Largo Argentina area.

Pantheon it is!
Steviegene, we are spending 3 nights in Capri at the Quisisana, 5 nights in Positano at the Marincanto(sp?) and 3 nights in Rome. Very very excited for the trip. |
Oh my gosh!
Sounds so perfect! I wish you a very wonderful time! Im so glad you decided to stay in Rome for a few days...it really is too good to miss. |
I think you've made an excellent decision. The area around the Pantheon and Piazza Rotunda is one of my favorite areas in Rome. We find ourselves there quite often when we are just wondering through the city, especially in the evenings. I think you will be very happy with your choice.

missypie,
You don't need to go to the taxi stand at Largo Argentina to get a taxi in the Centro Storico - just stand anywhere along Corso Vittorio Emanuele II and you'll catch one immedieately or within a minute or so. |
Make copies of your passports/tkts/credit cards. Wear a neck pouch and money belt. Beware of "gypsies", we were attacked twice within two blocks.
|
Pago,
What neighborhood? |
Bardo1, my views are skewed, I admit. We were a family of 5 and found that our best bet for finding one of the taxis that fit all of us was at a large taxi stand like at Largo Argentina.
|
I've never been able to get a taxi in Rome by just flagging it down on the street

Don't start panicking about being mugged because of one anecdote. I could also tell you that I went to Rome with my 13 year old son and we had no hassle whatsoever. That wouldn't mean that no-one else does, but one anecdote about 'gypsies' doesn't mean you will be either. By the way, gypsies are a racial group here in Europe and it is quite offensive to suggest that they are all crooks. If you were mugged by a black person would you say 'watch out for blacks because I was mugged by one'.
