Neustift am Walde Kirtag
 

Hello,

I'm here in gorgeous Vienna with my wife until Saturday (staying in a hotel near Stephansplatz). We are from NYC and do not speak German. We're interested in attending the Neustifter Kirtag on Saturday 21 Aug (http://www.neustift-am-walde.at/aktiv.htm). Just have a couple questions:

- Can we just attend in smart casual clothing or is traditional dress required? If not required, would it be *appreciated* if I wore lederhosen?

- Is the U4 to Spittelau and then the 35A bus the appropriate route? And will the buses run back to the city following the Kirtag?

The Neustift Kirtag is great fun! We'll be there with friends this weekend, as well.

Traditional dress is not required; you will see the full range of Trachten, everything from the more formal to the casual, along with jeans, shorts, and yes, flip-flops and Crocs. By all means, though, wear your Lederhosen if you have it!

Connecting directly to the 35A from U4/Spittelau is not obvious. You have to exit the station near the Fernwärme Wien (the energy plant decorated a la Hundertwasser-style), walk past the DMV-building (ugly, modern construct), then cross the street for the 35A terminus. If you are coming from the Inner Stadt and are near Shottentor, a more direct connection, though slightly longer, is to take the 38 Tram to Gatterburggasse, then simply cross the street to connect to the 35A. During Kirtag all of the buses will terminate at Agnesgasse; from there the "heart" of Kirtag is but a couple minutes' walk.

Buses running to and from Kirtag will be ample, and will run well into the evening. As for advice, I suggest you bring cash; purchase your return ticket with your departure; and, if this is your first Grüner Veltliner experience, start slowly. The local varietals are strong. :)

So glad you had a good time! Though Central Europe can turn almost anything into an occasion to eat and drink, the Kirtags and harvest festivals are among our favorites. :)
