Another vote for using a car for this trip because there is a lot of other stuff to see in the area.
I recommend that you do both castles Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein to get a feel for both what the fantasy castle is all about and to see what it was like for people who actually lived in a castle. When you go up the hill to Neuschwanstein go ahead and hike up to Marienbruck for the best photo op of the castle. This will be the picture you show to your friends back home.
Also in the area within easy driving distance is a beautiful rococo church Wiesekirche, Oberammergau for the painted building and woodcarvings, Linderhof, Ettal Monastary, Garmish for a visit to the zugspitze, and Mittenwald to see the violin makers shops.

Leburta,
Can you comment on the price range of John's tours? I didn't see prices on his website. Also, what sort of vehicle were you in? We will have five adults.
The correct website is www.johns-bavarian-tours.com for any other interested posters!
Thanks!

Put me in the camp recommending a visit to Neuschwanstein. Although I am not big on crowds either, it is just one of those things - it is a major attraction and very much worth the visit, and a lot of other people want to go there too. So there will be crowds.
The rooms that are completed are really wonderful. As others have said - some of the best craftsmanship of the time and an amazing look into Ludwig's fantasy world. I also liked walking through the unfinished sections - you walk through an unfinished hallway and the giftshop is in an unfinished room. After seeing the spectacular finished rooms, it was neat to see what is underneith all that stuff.
The tour was short, but what the heck - a lot of people want to see the place and if the tours were as long as I'd like them to be, a lot of people would have to be turned away. But once we wandered around outside more, up to the Marienbruke, through the forest, over to the lake, and so forth, we definitely felt like we had our fill.

I too greatly enjoyed our Neuschwanstein tour. We found the castle fascinating, and the views from Marienbruke alone were worth it. I couldn't imagine visiting this region and not visiting Neuschwanstein! Its touristy, sure, but with good reason.

>>Way are also planning a daytrip to Dachau, I'm assuming that card will work also?
If you mean the Bayern-Ticket, yes, it will work. The Bayern-Ticket is valid on all regional trains in Bavaria as well as on all conveyances in Munich (S/U-bahns, streetcars, and buses) and some other transit districts. However, at €27 (not €25) it is not the most cost effective way to get to Dachau from downtown Munich. Buy a "XXL Partner Tageskarte" (dayticket) from an MVV ticket automat for €11,80 (for up to five people). It is valid for unlimited travel in the two inner zones of the Munich transit district (MVV).
Note: a one way ticket for one person from the Munich inner zone to the Dachau memorial by S-bahn and bus is €4,40, so you save with the day ticket.
