Neuschwanstein
Is Neuschwanstein a manageable day trip from Munich? Should I stay in Fussen?

Yes, as I recall it is a manageable day trip from Munich. I would prefer to stay in Fussen because it would mean I could be at the castle early enough to avoid the worst of the crowds.

We took a castle tour bus from central Munich. Departed early(7Am?) Stopped to visit Linderhof then on to Neuchwanstein and returned to Munich by dusk. Plenty of time to enjoy both castles. We arrived at the bus pick-up point early and had upper deck forward facing seats . Great for photos . As I recall the October trip was inexpensive. Purchased tickets at the info-center. don |
I too did a day trip from Munich. I believe it was similar to don82's trip. We did stop in Oberammergau also for a bit.

I have done it as a day trip from Munich many times. You can go by train with a Bayern ticket. Train- Munich to Fuessen, then walk straight through the tiny train station and get on the bus to the castles. When you get off the bus, walk around the corner, keep walking and the ticket office is on the right. Very easy to do on your own.

We did a day trip from Munich, left very early morning, stopped at Weis church and Linderhof prior to arriving at Neu Castle in mid-afternoon.....it was sold out. We had a private driver/tour guide for the excursion. We were not pleased.
I did not research daytrip myself because we had hired an expert to take us. Now I live by trust....but verify. Thank you internet! And Fodor folks! Suggest you buy tickets to the castle on-line prior to arrival. It is an easy daytrip.....if prepared. |
