Netherlands- Texel

Can anyone help with info about Texel. I don't think that cars are allowed, is that correct. What is the best way to reach Texel probably from Amsterdam and also any recommendations of areas to stay? thanks for your help.

Drive or take trains to Den Helder then ferries to Texel - rent bikes once there or take buses or walk.

cars are allowed on Texel unlike some of the other Wadden Islands. You will need to book the ferry. You will also need to decide whether a car is useful or not on Texel and whether it is worth the expense of taking one.

Take train via Alkmaar to Den Helder, then ferry to Texel, as PalenQ already said.

Most people who are on Texel for a brief stay don't bring their cars.

Texel's bus service is called Texelhopper. Basically it works with one trunk line that goes from the ferry terminal to the main villages De Koog and Den Burg. Those are to a timetable

Additionally there's a minibus service that can take you to one of the 130 busstops on the island. For that you use the website to book a trip

https://www.texelhopper.nl/#/ (you can pay by credit card for your minibus trips)

From Den Helder station you take the #33 bus to the ferry terminal: it coordinates with arrival times of trains from Amsterdam, so the bus will be waiting for you at the station. If you go to the CONNEXXION ticket window at the ferry terminal, you can buy your bus tickets there. Once you leave the boat at the Texel terminal, you exit to the right, where buses will be waiting: you can take the #28 or #828 to go to De Koog or Den Burg.

If I can make a suggestion: stay in Den Burg, and rent your bikes there. Den Burg is a nice town, it's larger, so more facilities. And it's very central on the island so that's a plus if you go biking.

Last time I stayed there I really liked Hotel De Lindeboom, it's also got a pretty good rating on booking.com. Book as soon as you know you will go, it's a popular hotel.

One tip, depending on when you're going: Cycle (or take the minibus) to

De Cocksdorp and book a ticket for an excursion to the neighbouring island of Vlieland and its nature reserve, Vliehors.

here's the link

https://www.waddenveer.nl

you can buy tickets at the Lifeboat Shed.

I do hope you go through with your plans, because Texel is one of the most beautiful places to see in the Netherlands. You get all Dutch landscapes in super concentrated form, and the Dutch Wadden Islands have a real Scandinavian feel to them. Texel has a lot of maritime, because it was the staging port for the Dutch East India company.

And that's all you need to know about Texel! Excellent info from our Dutch expert. Makes me want to go back to appreciate it all more. Was very windy day I got off boat - not sure if that is usual or unusual but makes biking kind of hard at times.

You have lots on your wish list but Texel would be something completely different from other things.

@tidy, I am from Friesland, speak the language and all, my family has a long history in the province and I visit it often, because my mother lives there.

Anyhow, it's probably going to be a choice between either Texel or Friesland. If you do decide to go to Friesland I would advise to rent a car and make the trip there across the Afsluitdijk, the huge dam that closes off the former Zuiderzee from the Wadden Sea. Artist Daan Roosegaarde has installed a spectacular art piece there, but to fully see it you'll need to cross after dark. Don't know if that's feasible in your scenario.

Apart from that, a wonderful small city to stay in would be Harlingen, because it also gives you the opportunity to take the ferry across to either the island of Vlieland or the island of Terschelling, and then rent bikes and go cycling. Both Vlieland and Terschelling are much smaller than Texel, so you can "do" the entire island within a day and catch the evening ferry back to Harlingen. I have ties to Terschelling, because my brother studied there in merchant shipping college, so to me it's the best of the Frisian islands, but Vlieland is perfectly lovely too.

If you really want to splurge, you can stay on a deep sea tug boat, the Langenort:

Alternatively, on a daytrip without car and from april to october only, you could take the train to Enkhuizen, in the morning and take the summer ferry across to Stavoren, on the Frisian coast, cycle to Hindeloopen or Workum and back and take the evening boat back to Enkhuizen.

If you go to my profile you'll see a trip report that features the Enkhuizen - Stavoren ferry.
