Never heard of Charmin. I have never seen it for sale here. The Dutch being a Calvinist bunch like their loo paper somewhat harder than most.

Cha-Cha-Chaaaaaarrrrmiiiiinnn.
You need to watch more German TV commercials ;-).

In Britain, Charmin is sold using cartoon bears (geddit?)

Older-established brands use (1) excessively cute Labrador puppies (2) a creepily bizarre "chief executive" character played by a toddler with a CGI mouth matching the spoken words on the soundtrack.

@Colduphere:

Sometimes I even use five ply toilet paper :-)

@hetismij:

The Dutch brand name for Charmin is Edet!

To all others; No I don't have a PhD in toilet paper ;-)

TommieG thanks for that. I'm a cheapskate and buy AH's own brand ;)

CGI= computer-generated something or other - where they "draw in" a mouth that moves according to the soundtrack, as opposed to the real child's babblings.

Someone posted that I would not be able to bring back cheese and tulip bulbs in my souvenir bag.

The latest information I had was that cured, or hard, cheese could be imported, but soft cheeses or cheeses in water could not.

Also, I had understood that bulbs can be carried back, but only if they include a sticker that relates to some sort of inspection by a Netherlands government agency.

Has something changed? I rechecked the customs websites and they seem to confirm my prior understanding, but who knows if they are up to date?

I was the one who posted the comment about the cheese and tulips. I was reading another post today and it does seem that you can bring in the hard cheeses. Legally. Which we did. Not really knowing it was legal.

And now the tulips. I didn't realize you could bring them in if certified. I thought they must be shipped. Even the lady in the Tulip Museum said that. Bummer!!! That's what I get for leaving in 10 days from the time the trip was booked. I could have had easy souveniers for everyone!

If you click on my name I have posted my trip report from our recent trip. We had a wonderful time in Amsterdam. I hope you do too!

Re the corncob in the outhouse discussion: when I was growing up there was an expression, "Rough as a corncob." used when someone was complaining about some minor thing. (I never personally encountered the corncob, but the toilet paper hanging in my grandmother's outhouse was a lot rougher than that with which I indulge myself these days.)
