Netherlands bank recommendations please..
Can anyone please suggest banks in the Netherlands that have fair rates of exchange, conversion rates, fees etc.
Many thanks |
I've had an account at ABN-AMRO for over 35 years. It is OK. But you really don't care which bank cash machine you use if you are using your ATM card to draw cash. All of the banks in Europe use the same interbank exchange rate for transactions and none that I know of charge a fee more than nominal. Who is going to screw you is your home town bank. They can take $5 or 5% of each transaction. My credit union takes nothing. Call your bank to find out about their international ATM withdrawal fees and if it says anything above $0.00 or 0.00% get a new bank or credit union.

Are you looking to open an account in the Netherlands, or just occasionally exchange currency/cash checks during a visit?
I opened an ING checking account since I was going to be here for 4 months. Mostly I needed to be able to have a chip-and-pin card. Fee for the account is only ~ 1.5 euro per month, no minimum balance or other restrictions like in the US. The only fee I have thought "high" was a transaction charge when I wire transferred my initial deposit from home back to ING -- even that was less than Citibank would have charged me to do the reverse. |

I will be in the area for less than two weeks. Have heard warnings that some banks have unusually high fees. Thanks for your interest LIB |
They all charge about the same. It is your bank which will be charging you for ATM withdrawals not the Dutch bank.
Avoid the GWK machines - they are private and can charge you for withdrawals, but normal bank machines - ING, ABN-Amro, Rabobank, SNSbank will all be fine, and give you the best rate of exchange. |
Sorry I should have said they all charge account holders about the same, not they all charge about the same.
As Spaarne says it is your bank which may have high charges for using their card abroad, not the Dutch banks. |
