Netflix and Hulu
 

Just a silly question, can we watch Netflix and Hulu in Italy and Spain?
It's been some years for us and I believe we weren't able to watch them in 2012 when there.

Over normal wifi, no, you wont be able to watch them. You'll need to connect to a US based network via a virtual private network (VPN) to connect to a US based network. I do not know the details of how best to do that.

Netflix came to Greece ( and i think to the rest of Europe as well) 4 months ago....
I have downloaded the IOS App and i can watch it without any problems.This has a cost of 7,99 Euro per month however ( 9.99 for HD)

If you have an App on your smart phone or tablet it might work with your american subscription.

Netflix is now country specific so if you want to watch US Netflix, you´ll need to use a VPN or DNS hosting service. It will require your making a few changes to your internet settings but it shouldn´t be overly difficult.

For simply watching tv, you´ll probably not need a VPN which can cost more and consume some bandwidth. There are a number of DNS hosting providers such as Unlocator or Overplay who will help you with the setup and get you around the various barriers Netflix has established.

You should be prepared for a VPN not working with Netflix. They don't like such things and are aware of you using it. There have been a few reports about them blocking VPN users within Europe (Brits wanting to watch British Netflix while in Spain for instance).
There has been talk of allowing a limited period of out of zone viewing, but it hasn't happened yet.

Turn on the TV in the hotel and watch the local news, watch the sport, have a laugh at the ridiculously sexist Italian game shows. Watch their equivalent of MasterChef.

If you know what you are doing, VPN or DNS hosting can indeed be configured to bypass even Netflix´s most current efforts to block you from using the service you are paying for. Hulu, Amazon, and others are much easier to watch remotely but still require VPN or DNS hosting.

Witopia ia a VPN service you can subscribe to. You pay by the year (I don't remember if they do a month by month subscription). I've never used it to watch Netflix or Hulu. We use it primarily to make secure financial transactions when we are out of the country (or even in-country but at a hotel) or when we are in a country that blocks many websites.

I also use witopia for the same reasons as Kathie. It comes with clear instructions for how to set it up. I rarely watch even local TV when traveling, if I have spare time in the evening I review my trip plans and/or write a blog post.

SO uses a VPN to access Netflix, Amazon and premium channel apps when on overseas business trips. He says it works a treat.

I suppose judgmental responses like Blueeyedcod's aren't worth responding to, but really, buzz off, won't you? Not everyone is traveling willingly to places they want to visit, for one, and for two, even if they are, what business of yours is it what they choose to do for fun at the end of the day?

There is a Netflix Italy and a Netflix Spain so you can indeed access Netflix in those countries using your US Netflix account. The offerings will be different though BUT at least you won't have to worry about setting up a VPN.
