need to rent an apartment or space for 5 in my family in venice

We are travelling to Italy and need to have accomodations for 5. 2 adults; 3 kids (16 & under). Would rather not get two rooms but an apartment or something similar. Any suggestions? I've read other forums and checked many out. Would like to be close to St. Marks square. Thanks in advance.

I don't know if this apartment is quite large enough to accomodate your family, but we have stayed there many times and love it. Not really near San Marco, but in a a quiet neighborhood with easy access to all parts of Venice. It has one large bedroom - queen size bed - one small bedroom - small bed - and living room with fold out bed. www.athomeinvenice.com.

I stayed at the Vallaresso apartment very close to Piazza San Marco with my 4 children when they were aged 12-16. It was a great location and the apartment was very spacious.

Reconsider staying near the Piazza San Marco. Most of the year it's very crowded around there with tourists. Ditto around the Rialto Bridge.

Venice isn't a big place. Most of it is easily walkable. For a first trip, I'd avoid Giudecca. Not to speak of the Lido, and Mestre and other mainland locations.

Staying in Venice proper, if you get footsore, you can always catch a vaporetto or a taxi boat or even a gondola/traghetto to get back to your hotel.

Check out sleepinitaly.com for apartments, too.

We used venicerentals.com. I would recommend them. It's a husband/wife team. Husband is from Venice; wife is American.

Of course, "close" to San Marco is a matter opinion, but they do have some apts. within easy walking distance. I wouldn't be scared off the San Marco district. Plenty of quiet nooks to stay in.

We used apartmentinitaly.com in Feb 2008 - there were 4 of us & we booked the Paginini apartment. The cost was reasonable. We never actually saw the apartment we'd booked as the heating had broken (and you need heating in February in Venice!!) so they put us in one apartment for one night & switched us to a larger one for the final 3 nights. Very good service.

Budget tip - don't use the water bus. Far cheaper to use the traghetti to cross the canals.
Have fun!
