Need suggestions for a hotel in Paris
 

Hello everyone,
We are planning a week long trip to Paris by the end of Sep.. I need some recommendations for a hotel, that is historical, probably small boutique type hotel.. I don't feel like staying at a typical chain hotel.. We are willing to spend around $300 - $500 per night and we are 2 adults going. Any thoughts?

Also, we would love to venture a little bit interior within 1-2 hr drive from Paris. Do you think it's a good idea to split our stay between Paris and probably Champagne or any such interior village? Please help :)

after years of staying in the outer arrondissements in order supposedly to save money, last time we went to Paris we stayed right i the centre at the Hotel Britannique. What a difference it made! it's very central - walking distance to the Louvre, Notre Dame. Musee d'Orsay, St Germain, Les Invalides, etc. with very good access to Metro and RER B & C lines. Very nice rooms, great bathrooms, friendly service, and lots of nice restaurants nearby.

if you haven't been to Paris before you might just want to stay there for your week and do day trips as the mood takes you; alternatively 4 nights in Paris and 3 somewhere else might work, but you could feel short-changed. possibilities of places to stay are endless - what are your interests?

On our first trip to Paris, we stayed at Hotel Ceramic. It's about a block from Arc de Triomphe. We found it very convenient to a hub metro stop and close to Champs Elysée. Carved exterior and somewhat deco inside (when we were there). We found it charming and not hugely expensive.

If this is your first trip to Paris, I too recommend staying in the city for the entire visit. A side trip to Versaille or Giverny are simple by train if you have time. Hub and I have also taken side tours (over the course of several visits to Paris) to Loire Chateaux and Bruges.

Hotel des Saints-Peres, in the 7th, part of the Esprit de France group. It is made up of two or three town houses, so enormous variability in room size and configuration, but we have never had a bad one.

We rented an apartment in Paris for 5 nights, and it turned out to be perfect! It was located on Rue Marie Stuart and Montorguiel, in the heart of old Paris. Stroher's Boulangerie was right across the street. We had fresh hot croissants every morning! We enjoyed shopping in each little shop and ended up having Parisian style dinners that we prepared. There were many excellent restaurants nearby and we savored the wonderful cooking by Philippe at "Stuart Friendly's", two nights. It was close by the Metro, so we were able to go to all the major sites once we figured out the Metro. No one in our group spoke French, but we found all of the local Parisians very helpful and friendly. We were within walking distance to the Louvre and even walked to Notre Dame. The 4 day Paris Pass turned out to be an excellent deal for us.

We have stayed at the Hotel Du Louvre which is very central. It is right across the street from the Louvre and the Palais Royal. When you look out the front door you are looking straight down Ave De L'Opera at the operahouse. There is a metro stop right there. Very accessible of course to the Rue de Rivoli and Rue St Honore, not to mention Ile De La Cite and the left bank. It is in your price range. I believe it was built by Naploeon III. There are also many resaturants in the area.
If you are going for a week, and it is your first time in Paris, I would suggest staying in the city for the week. You can take a couple of day trips outside the city, but there is just so much to soak up in Paris.

We usually stay at the Madison, which is on the bvd. St-Germain across from the church. No traffic noise in the rooms, and the métro is kitty-corner from the hotel. There are 2 taxi stands nearby as well as an ATM and a branch of Monoprix.

On the fringe of the Marais, across from Hotel de Ville and two metro stops, is the newly redesigned and <b>Hotel Duo</b>. We discovered it a few years ago after staying on Ile St. Louis several times before that. The Duo is mod design, unique lounge bar and lobby. Boutique? Probably can be classified so. Perfect location for exploring the city (corner of Rue du Temple and Rue de la Verrerie).
Very colorful web pages..rates now look to be in the €200-250 range. Elevator, with bkfst available...breakfast restos all over.

Check out the Pont Royal. The rooms are small but the place is kind of historic. Also... can walk to D'Orsay, Louvre, etc., etc. For foodies... Joel Robuchon's Atelier is located in the hotel. We stayed there twice and enjoyed both our visits. However, beware breakfast unless it's included in the room rate.

We recently stayed at the Hotel Sainte Beuve for the second time. It is in the 6th very close to Jardin du Luxembourg and no more than 20 min walk to the Seine. We like that it is in a quiet neighborhood, not full of tourist activity, yet close to everything. The Metro stops are a block away, the bus is even closer. Considered a boutique hotel, the service is discreet and excellent.

Stayed at Le Petit Paris Hotel in the 5th back in April and loved it. It is a fairly new hotel, only less than 2 years old. It is very boutique-y, small with about 20 rooms, beautifully designed by French and Italian designers. Although it is such a small place, it is staffed 24/7 with very helpful and knowledgeable personnel.

Rooms are small but that seems to be a given in Paris. We opted to go for a superior deluxe room and it was still small-ish but it was not a surprise. Beds were about the BEST we ever slept in, shower and bathroom were amazing. And I believe we paid about 230 Euros per night. It incldued breakfast at the time but I believe they have stopped that.

If you look on their web site, they usually have all sorts of special deals running here and there and you might just pick one up (like 3 nights for the price of 2 or something like that). We loved it !!!

Try the Lutece on Ile St Louis. Absolute centre of Paris, nice island, good shops and restos, easy walk to Left/Right Banks, Notre Dame,etc..

Wow, so thrilled to see all of your responses.. I have been researching about all these recommendations , let's see what we end up with :) looking at booking something by end of the week. I was also leaning towards apartments but decided to try the hotels itself instead ..

Michele, that was our long time favorite on Ile St Louis...tried the Duo because the Lutece had no room at the time, and we loved it also.

But either one would be a good choice for you, Shubha! Have fun in Paris!

I think that there is a fair degree of agreement that staying somewhere central is the way to go.

Relais Saint Germain...the restaurant there is great (Le Comptoir) and you get priority there as a hotel guest. Odeon Metro stop is right around the corner. It's close to everything.

I would stay in Paris and take day trips, but I loved Reims.

I have stayed at the Lutece and loved it. We will be in Paris late Sept. and are renting an apartment this time on the Ile Saint Louis. The location is perfect.

Probably coming in too late with this, but since i am up late... nosing around the US forum (planning a little overnight getaway to Ojai, from Los Angeles)...

Though I must say, with any trip to a major city, it really does seem like the homework has to be done fresh every time, unless price is no object. The best value may be a special offer, or the place that seems just perfect might not have a room for the dates you need.

Or maybe I just like the puzzle-solving aspect of laying out a couple dozen choices amd whittling down!

And I really would recommend getting away for a night or two, even with (just) a seven night trip to Paris and the Ile de France. Chartres is so worthwhile and very close/easy to reach. Making a second choice depends on whether you have an interest in indulging a fantasy overnight - - consider http://www.grandesetapes.fr/en/Chate...ont/index.html for example though I have not been there for a decade (still, I think they are keeping up with the well-heeled clientele who seek such things - - the website now offers Chinese, as well as English!)

Our family likes the Hotel Relais Bosquet while it's not particularly historic it is very comfortable. Some rooms with Eiffel Tower view.

If I had your budget I would try the Hotel de l'Abbaye. It's built around a courtyard which provides charm and probably quiet.

Trains make many destinations easy daytrips from Paris. Our favorite has been Chartres.
