Need some info!!!
Whats up? Heading to London until July 1 and living near Covent Garden, need the some info:
Looking for some clubs with real beer/European and American ladies. It would be great to know some good restaurants in the area. I don't want to eat hagis, boiled oats and kidney pie every day. AND no other wierd ethnic food. Also, in about 2 weeks I will need to move from my hotel to an apartment. I definately need a shower and at least one bedroom. Budget is about $1800 per month. No idea of any rental agencies so that would be good. Hopefully that will buy me something better than the average Mr. Bean studio. Laundry facilities would be a nice bonus. Unfortunately I will have to ride the tube and won't be driving, so proximity to a station is a must. Also, a list of things to do in London other than the normal hohum touristy stuff. Not into castles or kitchy bridges and churches. Wouldn't mind renting a decent boat with some power and checking out some clubs on the river if there are any. Rock on.. |
When I say laundry facilities I mean a Chinese laundry or dry cleaning business. A business that will pick up, drop off and not lose my clothes.
|
" I don't want to eat hagis, boiled oats and kidney pie every day."
Then best stay in whatever provincial dump is unfortunate enough to house you at present. Obnoxious gits aren't welcome here - and you'd probably starve. |
Flanner, you just made me laugh out loud, thank you.:)
|
Have you tried going to Dicksville in Dickland? You'd fit right in.
|
Seriously people, if you actually go there, you'll experience what I have. Eel jelly will be the least of your problems.
Very funny comment though. I gave it a laugh. I am assuming there is a Starbucks in the area? I do like great Italian food though...Did go to a place back in 2007 that had some great frites they did in duck fat. Was owned by a couple from Rome who were second generation. Family wasn't there long enough to forget how to prepare a meal. Very nice place. I will have to see if it is still there. It seems the local monarchy has taxed hardworking folks like that out of business. Be nice if they had a more democratic way of deciding who pays for the infrastructure. |
Are you nuts?
I have just had several of the best meals of my life in London. Try Medlar, the Harwood Arms, Pierre Koffman, Bistro Bruno Loubet. Didn't have Italian this time but Buca di Lupo was good last time. You can't rent a boat on the Thames in London. Private river craft are not allowed. You can do a search here for apartment rentals in London; they have been discussed at great length. There are Starbucks everywhere, as well as dozens of other coffee chains. You can't miss a coffee chain. |
Troll much?
Because if you're not a troll, your are the most ignorant person I have encountered on this site and give new depth of meaning to "Ugly American." |
Buca di Lupo sounds good...Also heard good things about Luna Nuova. Be nice if they had a vodka list online. Londoners probably stay satisfied with whatever's cheapest though.
Apartment rentals - Anyone tried this? http://www.homeaway.com/vacation-ren...om/london/r482 I gotta say, the whole bedbug problem has me concerned. Do they fumigate? Is that even an option? Sad about boat rentals...Someone owns the boats, I could rent from a private individual for the right price I suppose? I can go bigger.. BTW - I have had good fish and chips. Most you couldn't tell the difference from McDonalds however. I should say fish was good, fries were always a bit soft. None were hardly worth the money. Cheers |
OP's favorite restaurant: "Fat Burger".
Troll, let it feed itself. |
Troll? Im a guy..That is if a troll is what my buddies and I call certain females...NC=No class.
Whatever..Chill Apartment rentals - Anyone tried this? http://www.homeaway.com/vacation-ren...om/london/r482 I usually eat out, but what if I wanted to cook? Any large supermarkets? |
Supermarket?
What's a supermarket? That's a concept we are unfamiliar with in the UK. Hmmm...you funny foreigners and your funny ways! |
Tell you what, why don't we put you in touch with Dobby? Bags of useful tips and advice there.
|
It's lucky you're not going to Paris, where you'd be forced to eat frogs' legs and snails...
|
"You can't rent a boat on the Thames in London. Private river craft are not allowed. "
Nonsense, the Thames is buried in private boats Still this Troll is very funny |
""It's lucky you're not going to Paris, where you'd be forced to eat frogs' legs and snails...""
LOL!! God forbid I would have a decent French meal..You would never know if you had frog in the UK. It all looks the same once you grind it up with oats and boil it for two weeks in the stomach of an unfortunate barnyard friend. I just want to be careful where I eat. According to the latest news it sounds like most of the good steaks are the result of the losing polo team. I've eaten donkey in the Mediterranean and it was fantastic with an adequate wine paring. However, I don't want to pay a small fortune for "steak" that has been under the Duke of "SomeChesters" sweaty butt while he's trying to impress the Dutchess of Gross over Bight. As for the snails: in the UK they crawl on every rock wall. Definitely don't want welks on my dinner plate. Especially on a hot bed of laver bread. The war is over people, you now have permission to eat food raised above ground. " the Thames is buried in private boats" - YES, in 2000 I sailed the Thames in a 40 footer, out to see and across the channel with a friend. He has since sold the boat, but I would love to check out some of the nightlife along England’s oldest sewer system. |
>>it was fantastic with an adequate wine paring<<
How does one pare wine, pray? >> I would love to check out some of the nightlife along England’s oldest sewer system.<< Why does that not surprise me? |
IMHO - this IS Dobby!
|
Hey Marty baby
try the Aberdeen Angus Steakhouse in London, I think you'll like it. |
OP looks a lot like Joe Strummer!
OP, I'm thinking McDonald's, Starbucks, Burger King, and The London Hardrock Cafe would be just fine for you |
"How does one pare wine, pray?"
You missed another typo. You should spell check again; try something cleverer and less abrasive. Unfortunately for you, you have the time.. I have been reading this forum for quite some time with only this post. The personal digs seem to be a signature of conceit. It would be possible to admire those who share their knowledge and provide it willingly without limit. As an American, we all would do the same and think nothing of it. We don’t strike out for our own esteem. I truly hope this is not a symbol of British “integrity.” As for you who have been an asset, you deserve a pat. It would be great if someone could tell me if you can see professional basketball or football in England? I love to watch it here and would very much miss real sporting events while biding my time. Also, is it possible to watch professional US sporting events on TV in London? I really doubt I could stand month’s abroad watching nothing but Two Fat Ladies and championship sheep herding on BBC. |

Martin - i can't tell if you know what a troll is or not - which you would know if you've been here a lot - or even if you are one! <<It would be great if someone could tell me if you can see professional basketball or football in England? I love to watch it here and would very much miss real sporting events while biding my time.>> you might get some pro basketball in somewhere like Milton Keynes or Luton - but the down side course is that you'd have to go to Milton Keynes! anyway the sort of sporting events you're talking about don't count as real sport here - we're much keener on what you call soccer, cricket and rugby - and you can watch them to your heart's content on Sky. for food, if you're serious, get hold of a time out guide - plenty of ideas there. |

What would be the "major" league I could find more about? -or- what is the equivalent to, say, the NFL, the highest level of cricket in the UK? Lord knows, a soccer match is a good place to be killed. |
for cricket, i think that 20/20 would be the place to start. look out for it on Friday and Saturday nights after Easter, when the cricket season will start, at Lord's or the Oval.
otherwise, if you're still around then, England will be playing New Zealand at the Oval at the end of June: http://www.viagogo.co.uk/Sports-Tick...enty20-Tickets |

Is this a ticket broker? Or are they available at the venue or something like Ticketmaster? |
here we are - tickets for the Oval at £30 each:

duh yeh! and also huge red phone boxes; zebra stripes; fish, chippies and Chinese take-outs and pubs. Got it all London does! |
Are you a Joe Strummer fan? (I ask because of your profile pic)
Stummerville, the charity his wife founded about 10 years ago following his death, is hosting a benefit gig at Ace Cafe on 23 April. http://www.strummerville.com/ace-caf...n-benefit-gig/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strummerville |

My ex-wife had a contract with Hellcat. I got to meet him twice. Once in Los Angeles and once on the boardwalk in Atlantic City. In LA he signed the bottom of a room service tray and gave it to me after I gave him some stamps to mail a Mescaleros CD. I have a photo with him and the tray framed with the tray. |
That is, framed photo with Joe and the tray. Both were equally interesting. Not really, he just seemed confused by the whole situation.
