Need some help credit card for hotels in italy

Ill be staying in venice only for one night when i check out im going to lay for my room with my visa debit card. Now when i check in i wanted to give them my capital one mastercard credit card my credit limit on it is low. Does anyone know if hotels in europe put a hold on your credit card when you check in?

Or should i just pay for the room when i check in?

you need to ask the individual hotel - they will have different procedures.

The hold usually isn't for the cost of the room, but for potential damages.

No - typically they will require a CC - but for incidental charges (phone, meals, etc) as well as potential damages. I believe you can check into a hostel without a CC but have never seen a hotel where they don't require one.

If the limit on the CC is SO low - how will you pay for other hotels?
