Need some encouragement ! Planned and payed trip to Italy in May plagued by strikes, rain and landslides :(
 

I have planned a perhaps once in a lifetime trip to Naples, the Amalfi Coast and Rome. However in the past few weeks I've learned there,s a strike on the day I arrive (Alitalia ground crew and pilots) and I may not make my connecting flight to Naples from Milan. There's been unprecedented rain on the Amalfi coast recently resulting in a landslide and the closing of the drive between Positano and Amalfi. And last, but not least, a strike by Italian air traffic controllers the day I'm scheduled to leave. I'm pretty flexible when traveling and always try to work around setbacks but I'm starting to get just a little nervous about this trip. I not superstitious but....

Hey! If you follow the "glass is half full" philosophy, the strikes may be called off and the sun could be out by May. At least you'll be in Italy...sigh.

The rockslide on the AC road should be cleared by the time you arrived.

You can also take the ferry between Sorrento or Positano and Amalfi.

If you don't make your connecting flight out of Milan, they will put you on the next flight, or you could take the train.

If there is a strike on the day you leave, go the next day. You will have an extra day in Italy.

Have you told your hotels that you might be delayed on arrival/departure?

do not worry...strikes come and go...they are usually "rolling" strikes so no area is totally shut down. ( they seem to like to strike, but not actually shut down the country)if the air controllers go out, i am sure it won't be for long...the weather will break for sure, roads will be open and you WILL have the trip of a lifetime...the scenery and food will make up for any inconvienences...

Look at it this way, maybe the other tourists will be discouraged also and you will have a less crowded environment.

I can't speak from experience about the potential strikes, but I can tell you not to sweat the landslide. We had a similar experience five years ago on the Amalfi Coast with a road closure and our only minor inconvenience was a detour. Don't sweat it.

I flew from Milan last October and there was an air traffic controllers' strike planned for that day also. There was no problem. We took off on time.

Italy is so great and the Italians are so terrific, you won't worry about inconveniences (unless you're one of those people who are so persnickety they shouldn't leave home in the first place!)
