Need recommendations for Amsterdam hotel
 

Looking for a 5 star hotel in Amsterdam. Any recommendations? Would like to be near the dams, museums, RLD, and gardens.

Hi... not sure what you mean by being near 'dams'. Do you mean Dam Square?<BR>If so, Dam Square and Red Light District are at one end, while museums and Vondelpark are at the other end.<BR>None of these are really all that far apart, though, and trams are easy to use.<BR>Personally, I wouldn't want to stay by Dam Square or RLD; Vondelpark and the Museum quarter are less 'intense' and have lots of nice streets, cafes, tram connections, etc.<BR>That said, my budget never allows for a 5-star. Perhaps you could research a little for 2 or 3 hotels (5*), then ask a new question about those specific hotels..?

Christina,<BR><BR>Check out Hotel America, very nice luxury hotel on Liedspleine. Great area, easy access to museums, Vondlepark, shopping. Hop a tram to anywhere too far to walk.

Actually, just go to www.bookings.nl, and see the results for 5* hotels. For each one, click on the location/plan link to see where it is. Then come back and ask the experts what their recommendations are.

How about 4* hotels? I have stayed at the Ambassade and Radisson SAS. Both are very nice and in good locations. I also would not stay in Dam Square (very busy and surprisingly drab) although some people like the Krasnapolsky which is located there. I didn't think it was that good.

I was in Amsterdam for the first time this past summer. Ditto on the negative comments about The Dam area... very gray and drab. I *really* liked the neighborhoods of Leidseplein and Vondelpark (and hear the Jordaan's nice too but didn't get there).<BR><BR>As above, I'm only a 3-star kind of traveler so can't help with a specific hotel. But I'd highly recommend *not* staying in the center near the train station, Dam, red light, etc. It's a relatively small city and very easy to get around from district to district for sightseeing.

I once needed to stay in Amsterdam for 1 night. One hotel (was it the Hotel France? If not, I don't mean to libel them) said that they rent to gay men staying longer. ...so I didn't meet either qualification. I ended up staying at the Ibis.

my wife and i love amsterdam and have been three times. our first trip we stayed at the Hotel l'Europe, which you can find through LHW.com, this is owned by Heineken owner Freddy Heineken, we think they have a great bar, look up Gert the bartender, and also a super breakfast. but we think the Grand, which can be reached @ THEGRAND.NL is the best accomadations. beds that are impossible to get out of, a great spa, that nobody's ever in, and a great breakfast at the albert roux dining room. we just went on our first winter trip to europe and spent three nights at the grand, excellent location, excellent place. make sure you call to book your room, you will get a much better deal. on the interenet the one bedroom suite was $600 euro, on the phone we got it for $400. we think the junior suites are great, if your going to spend more time get a one bedroom suite with a couch big enough to lay on. any info i can help with let me know. rich
