Need recommendation: Hotel/ Guesthouse/ B&B to base from in Tirol.
Three of us (my husband and 9 year old daughter) spending a week between Innsbruck and Salzburg. Leaning towards Kitzbuhel. Looking to spend $200 or less per night. Looking for a comfortable mix of the right location and a traditional feel (old world) to settle into and travel out from. A B&B or guesthouse with kitchenette (apartment) could work well too. We'll have a rental car. Anybody stay somewhere they just loved and could recommend? I'm flexible as to which town....
We are traveling in mid-August.
Thank you for your insights!

Its been a long time since I was in Austria...
But I have travelled with Untours in the past and found their town selections in each country to be very good.
They base their apartments in Kuchl, Werfen and Pfarrwerfen.
I'm sure you'll hear from other posters, but these towns look GREAT!
Check out each town's website to get started...

Hi,
A few places we've stayed and we'd recommend (although they are not really between Salzburg and Innsbruck) are:
Zell am See.
We stayed at the Pension Alpenrose, but it does not offer apartments, sorry. We loved Zell am See though. Also, the Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse is well worth a drive in the area.
Our favorite place to stay, while not in Austria, is in Ramsau bei Berchtesgaden. This is 20 to 30 minutes from Salzburg. Love the Pension Mayringerlehen! Three stays, total of 10 nights (so far) the last 5 years.

From here:
Berchtesgaden (10 min.)
Konigsee (15 min)
Jennerbahn cable car (15 min)
Eagles Nest (Kehlsteinhaus (15 min)
Rossefeld Panorama Road (20 min.)
Salt Mines (20 min)
Salzburg (20 to 30 min.)
Bad Reichenhall (20 min)
"Mad" King Ludwig's Herrenchiemsee Palace (1 hr.)
Zell am See (1:30)
Hallstatt (1:30)
We love the area, as I'm sure you can see. Especially love staying with the Grassl's (owners) of the Mayringerlehen. They make the stay special. Wonderful people.
The Zillertal is spectacular for mountain scenery. This is about an hour from Innsbruck. We stayed in the small village of Finkenberg overlooking the town of Mayrhofen at the Gaestehaus Bergland. Very nice place with stunning views!

Another "home away from home" for us is the Gasthof Badl in Hall in Tirol, 6 miles from Innsbruck. We stayed here 4 times since '01, including last November. Great central location and Sonja Steiner (owner) is simply wonderful. This is also convenient for a day trip to the Italian Dolomites.

I second Gaestehaus Bergland. We stayed there last year in one of the apartment units. Very comfortable with great views of the valley and mountain tops. The kitchen was stocked with all the necessary utensils.
