Need quick help, where to buy a voltage converter in the 5th, Paris?

Before I start wandering around the neighborhood I figured I'd check with the helpful people here. I'm in the 5th now (apartment is right near the river) and realized I forgot my voltage converter at home. Does anyone know if I'm near a store that would have one?

Thanks!

John

First, do you have a device that "needs" one. The reason I ask is that most laptop power supplies, battery chargers and the like can run on 110-240v 50-60 hz. Look on the back of the device to see what it's requirements and capabilities are.

If it is something like a hair dryer, then most converters cannot handle the load anyway and it is cheaper to just buy the dryer.

Are you sure you need a voltage converter?

Most modern electronics (computers, phones, digital audio players, CPAPs) don't need a converter, only a plug adaptor. Check the plate on the device or wall wart, and it will tell you if it adapts to 220 automatically.

Most 110 volt heating appliances (hairdryers and irons) don't work well with voltage converters. When they blow up, it can be spectacular. It is much cheaper and safer to just buy ones made for 220 current.

If you need plug adaptors or really do need a voltage converter, I had good luck at FNAC. There is one on the rue de Rennes. It is a bit like Best Buy in the US.

Yeah, I thought all my electronics had one built in, but one doesn't - my son's video game (Nintendo DS), which isn't a big deal while here, but nice for the train to London and the flight home. But thanks for asking. I'm assuming I can get one at a hotel gift shop, but I'll probably pay a fortune.

You can try the FNAC Digital store on Boulevard Saint Germain, next to the intersection with Boulevard Saint Michel, on the 6th arrondissement side.

Thanks for the FNAC suggestions. They actually had a USB charging cable for the DS which was much cheaper than a voltage converter, so it's charging through my laptop right now.

Thanks again!

The easiest thing to do is buy a Nintendo Ds power supply. I have one for Europe and one for the US for mine. You can get them at any shop which sells the Nintendo Ds.
