One day the UK and USA will not use cheques/checks!

Lots of small vendors in the US use those simple devices where they can accept credit cards with their phone. It's been used a lot by vendors at flea markets, street markets, etc., or other small entrepreneurs. I think Starbucks uses it, and they own part of it, actually (Square). The guy who started that company is also the founder of Twitter.

But it almost certainly isn't a chip and PIN card so what good will that do ???

Sorry, but we don't know anything for certain! We have no idea where nantravel is from or the nature of the credit card.

This thread has been interesting. I may break down and get the chip & pin card from the State Dept Credit Union.
