In Amboise, which is a good base for touring the valley, there is a very nice hotel called Manoir Les Minimes and run by a wonderful gentleman named
Eric Deforges. This an old manor house that has been converted to a hotel. The rooms are immense and have wonderful furnishings and bathrooms. It is right in Amboise and provides free secure car parking as well (you are given an electronic opener for the gates). Highly recommend this hotel for a good base while exploring. They have a web site at http://www.amboise.com/les-minimes/.

On the page that comes up the second picture is looking from the main house into the parking area and the small building is a stand alone cottage that can be booked as well. As you can see it is right on the river and at the base of the Château d'Amboise.

You will never regret staying here. By the way they do not have any food service except for breakfast but that is no problem as Amboise offers plenty of eating choices.

Thanks for your suggestion, I called and they are booked. Any other suggestions?

Staying at Best Western Hotel in Tours which is a French hotel-3 star hotel about 10 minutes from the train( where you will return your car) and bus station. Go on www.bestwestern.com find country and area. Found this from some one else on Fodors. A very reasonable price and within driving distance of Loire Valley.

Just got back from Amboise and stayed at Manoir les Minimes, and loved it! The town of Amboise which is very walkable from the hotel is adorable. Many specialty shops and cafes. We were able to see the Royal Chateau d'Amboise from our hotel room! Close to Chenenceaux, and wine tastings. *no elevator, however. Very reasonable at $115 Euro's per night. Terrific modern bathrooms as well. Spacious.

We ate at a cute little place between Blois and Amboise in the town of Cande Sur Beuvron. I picked up their brochure which shows lovely rooms for 58 to 63 euros. It's a member of the relais du silence association. Name La Caillere and e-mail [email protected] sorry they don't have a website so you could see the pictures but their brochure makes them look very nice. Place had a sort of modern annex built onto a charming old house/structure. I expect that this place would be very comfortable and their prices are certainly reasonable--that's why I took their brochure. Hope this is of help.

Lisa
Glad you liked Manoir les Minimes. I am always happy to share information when I find a hotel/inn/B&B that I think is good value for the money and this is one.

We stayed at this hotel a few years ago and had a great stay and its reasonably priced. The meals were fabulous.
http://www.labreche-amboise.com/

I've stayed twice a the Chateau des Tertres in Onzain, just across the Loire from Chaumont. Nice place, friendly owners, decent price.

My suggestion is that you try a Bed and Breakfast location. You have a car so a farm or country house would be reasonable. There is an organization of B and B's in France that gives you a rating ( one to five ears of corn) that is reliable and there are many to choose from.

I stayed (May 2002) at a B&B in Blere, close to Amboise. The name is Le Moulin du Fief Gentil and it is lovely. A former water mill, beautifully restored and decorated, includes breakfast. Big private room, beautiful bathroom. Run by Roger (English) and Ann (from Belgium). Price for two was 100 Euros.

Peter NEWINGTON [[email protected]]
Three of us stayed here in August 2001. We chose it because the owners were British, and we thought we might need some help in touring the Loire area (we really didn't need the help after all). The hotel is outside Amboise (maybe 10 mins drive) on its own in a big open area. Our room was in the converted barn; all Laura Ashley style and brand new, with great bathroom. (Actually we had hoped for a little more rustic.) We had two twins and a day bed, all very comfortable. They do breakfast and dinner, although we thought the meals were a bit on the high side for what they were and chose to eat in Amboise. The cook tries, but she is after all English trying to do French. The hotel part was very nice though. Don't recall the price, but we are budget travelers so it wasn't outrageous. Amboise is a good middle town for touring the area.
