Need lodging recommendations for Reutte, Austria
 

My husband and I have decided to stay in or around Reutte, Austria during our visit to the alps in July. We will be coming from Nuremberg via the Romantic Road and will stay in the area 3 nights before returning to Munich. Our plan while in the area is to visit Fuessen and the Ludwig castles, do a little hiking, and relax a bit. Nothing too strenuous. We will visit Oberamergau and that area on the way back to Munich.

I am looking for lodging recommendations in the Reutte area. Our budget is 125 Euro per night, including breakfast. In town or out of town is fine, but looking for some place quiet and laid back. If we can take some nice walks right from the lodging, that would be great.

I would also recommend Gutshof Zum Schluxen. We stayed there last spring and walked to the castles, to Reutte and even to Fussen. But then we like to walk and we didn't have a car. We liked the B&B a lot - the valley with cows and deer feeding, then the walk thru the woods to get to the castles, crossing the border from Austria to Germany.

We were disappointed with Reutte itself(changed since our last visit a few years ago) - too much traffic going thru town.

One more vote for Gasthoff von Schluxen in Unter Pinswang, jut on the Austrian side of the border from Fussen.

It is a farm-house B&B type gasthaus with a working farm, pet deer and rabbits and I understand you can hike to the castles from there. You might email them and see just how far that hike is, or maybe omeone here knows.

(all of us have spelled if differently!) It is laid back. The inn keeper is so helpful and nice. The food is very good.
There are great hiking trails and it was so nice to be awakened by the sound of the cow bells from the pastures. It is on a working farm.

Don't forget to see the White Church. Can't remember the translation. But the inn keeper will know!!

We really liked Moserhof Hotel. It was about 80E/night for a double. The room was huge and very clean. It was more like a big hotel with a little bit of Austrian charm. We had a great dinner there as well..

The very fact that you said Reutte suggests you came from a Steves perspective. I find that the best base for this area is actually Oberammergau. Just look at the map. The Zur Rose is good value.

Why Oberammergau?? I'm trying to figure out my itinerary as well. Fussen vs. Reutte vs. Oberammergau...

It is just more centro. I consider 5 places to be mandatory in this region:
Weiskirche
Both of Ludwigs castles
Zugspitz
Closter Ettal/Garmisch
Oberammergau is smack dab in the middle. Both Reutte and Fussen are not.

Actually, I got the recommendation for Reutte from this board, not Rick Steves - perhaps the recommendation came originally from him ;) After weighing the different options in the area, it seemed to fit our needs and wants the best. Our aim for this part of the trip is not to be in the middle of anything - just take a couple days to relax, hike, and so on. We will see the Ludwig castles - hiking to them sounds terrific. After our visit to the area, we have a day to drive back to Munich, with nothing else planned. We figure we will see Oberamergau and that area on the way there. If we don't see all the "must-sees", that is ok.

I like Oberammergau also. Rick Steves calls it "the Shirley Temple of Bavarian villages" and he's right. It is so stereotypical it makes all the others blush. It is also very central to NeuSchwanstein/Hohenschwangau, Wiesekirche, Linderhof, Ettal Monastary, Garmish, Mittenwald, etc.

One more question - how do you pronounce Reutte?

We really liked the Hotel Maximilian (Silivia's second website), though it's about 6 years since we stayed there. We got the name through Rick Steves, so you might check out his current write-up. Friendly Gabi was a big help in giving us the best way to get around (there had been floods and some roads were closed.)

I believe it is pronounced Roy-Tay... roll the "r"

Thanks for the recommendations. I have emailed the Gutshof Zum Schluxen to see if they have room. It looks like exactly what we are looking for. The others look good too, so if that one doesn't pan out, I will try them as well.

Actually it's "roy-tuh", with a heavy accent on the first syllable, and the rest is almost lost.
