Need input on 2 Tuscany bases...Asciano and Pienza

Please help us finalize upon 2 bases to explore Tuscany (7 nights total).

We're looking at Asciano near Siena (Podere Finerri) and Pienza (Relais La Saracina...thx to Mr. Stu Dudley!).

Originally we planned on Chianti as 1 base, but we're finding that the majority of areas we want to explore are more Southern.

Any input, positive or negative is appreciated.

Having been to both, I would definitely choose Pienza. I was only in Asciano briefly on the way somewhere else, but it is very small, and more importantly, I don't think you'd have a lot to choose from for restaurants. I spent three nights in Pienza and loved it, and there are numerous restaurants to choose from. If you want to read more about Pienza, here is my trip report from that trip (you can skip to the Tuscany part):

Well - if the purpose is to "explore Tuscany" then Asciano is a good location for San Gimi, Volterra, Monteriggioni and, of course Siena (Chianti too). Pienza is perfect for the Val d'Orcia...

Those locations are only about :40 apart. I would choose near San Gim. if you want a 2nd location--not both south of Siena.
