Need information on Russian transit visa
 

Flying from Hanoi into Moscow on Aeroflot and departing from Moscow to Athens the next day on a Aerosvit Airlines (Ukrainian company), I understand that I need a transit visa.
Does anyone know the price and the conditions to obtain this type of visa. Especially do I need an insurance ?
I'm a French citizen.

None of us here are experts on Russian visas - esp for French citizens. I suggest you contact the nearest Russian embassy - as well as the French one - to find out the correct procedures.

It does sound as if you need a transit visa if leaving the airport area. Russian transit visas are usually valid for 3 days if travelling by air and are easier to obtain than tourist or business visas since you don't need the official letters of invitation, usually you require an application form, photos passport and eticket receipt, fees & processing times should be posted on one of the Russian consulate websites. Are you based in Hanoi & is that where you are applying for the transit visa? Rules for visa applications can vary depending on country of application, citizenship & residency or status in country of application, so check with the local/nearest Russian consulate, which there is one in Hanoi but all info seems to be in Russian.

nytraveler: when I don't know the answer to a question on an Internet forum, I stay quiet. I don't come with a "none of us here are experts blah blah". I don't think you can speak on behalf of all the members of this forum and I suppose that some people here have some experience on the topic.
Thank for your suggestion to contact the nearest Russian embassy, but as Odin points out the rules of application often vary from a consulate/embassy to another. Sometimes even, the staff of the embassies don't give you, voluntary or not, the correct information - like saying that you cannot get a visa on arrival when you actually can. I have several examples like that.

So I rephrase my question: has any of you ever applied for a Russian transit visa? Did you get it on the spot or did you have to apply before hand?

Definitely apply beforehand, there is never a case (to my knowledge) where you can get visas on arrival in Russia.

while i rarely agree w/ nyrtraveler, in this case - the salient facts are that you are a FRENCH citizen needing a transit iisa. WHY would take thew word of someone here, who likely is a US citizen, vs an consulate or embassy? I see so much misinformation on the boards on minorsthings i certainly wouldn't trust info in visas....
