Need in-put on 8 day driving itinerary in southern Germany.

My husband and I are getting off a river cruise in Mainz, the morning of May7th, picking up our rental car, then driving to the Rothenburg o.d.t. area, we will spend one night here. The next day we will continue on the Romantic Road to Nordlingen, from here we will go to the Berchtesgaden area, spend two nights, then on to Fussen, spend two nights.. From Fussen we will drive to Freiburg, spend the night, drive the short-n-scenic Black Forest drive then head up to the Worms area for two nights. Monday morning turn our car in at Mainz, take bus or train to Frankfurt airport for our return flight .

Are we trying to do too much? Are we missing something we should really see? (We have been to Garmisch and Munich before, loved it.)

Thanks for any in-put you can give!

The Michelin Green Guide for Germany suggests an 8 day tour of Baden-Wurtemberg (sp?). You could use that as a base and modify it according to your taste.

I have family in Freiburg and the Schwarzward; nevertheless I'd suggest you skip that area. I'd also offer that you omit Füssen as well and concentrate on the Berchtesgaden region.

I've no doubt that your stay in this gorgeous area (which can include Salzburg and the Salzkammergut) will be your most memorable.

If you are going down to Freiburg, consider going east a bit to the "Bodensee" on the Austia/Swiss border. It is a very beautiful area with a fabulous garden on an island. Also less touristy - no-one's heard of it! [or hadn't a few years ago]
On the way back have alook at the "Pfalz" region around Annweiler - lovely villages and vinyards by the mile. Finally Heidelberg with its Schoss and funicular - very atmospheric. Good Luck

The Berchesgaden area really is very, very lovely. Some of our best memories of our 10 day trip last summer. Stayed at the Schiffmeister Hotel on Lake Koginsee. Fantastic! Don't miss the Eagle's Nest. But we enjoyed seeing the castle at Fussen. Fussen itself was not worth a 2 night stay IMO. We also went to Freiburg - you can skip this town. It is a 4 hour drive from Fussen. We stayed in a very small town outside of Freiburg called Opfingen and stayed at a great guest house on a farm there. From there we went to Triburg in the Black Forest, which I recommend and also went over to Colmar, France which I recommend very highly. Le Château du Haut-Königsbourg on the way up to Frankfort was an absolute delight. It is a huge medevil castle that you can tour. Was a highlight of our trip. Another great website to check out is http://www.bensbauernhof.com/ It focuses only the area you are planning to visit. Good Luck. Patti
