Need hotel recommendation in St Malo
We need to spend a night in St Malo at the end of our two week holiday in the Dordogne, as our ferry leaves early in the morning. We don't want something very expensive (i.e. no more than 100 Euro), just clean, quiet and pleasant. This will be in early July. Does anyone have recommendations for a good hotel there?

We are now thinking of staying at the hotel Ascott (I know a little more expensive than what I originally asked for). Has anybody stayed there or heard anything about it?

The Michelin guide to hotels and restaurants prints the Ascott's symbol in red, which means very good within its class--it's the only notation in red in the entire listings. The guide says that that the hotel is a happy marriage between contemporary décor and the ancient building.
Hope that helps. |
Does it have to be St Malo - we just stayed in, and can wholeheartedly recommend, The Hotel Arvor in nearby Dinan.
Dinan is 20km south of StMalo and a very picturesque town in itself with alot of excellent restaurants. Our clean, comfortable, spacious double room (more than perfectly adequate if not exactly special) cost about 55€. We had to get the 10.30am ferry the following morning and, leaving at 9am we were in plenty of time without too much time spent waiting quayside for loading to begin. If that's the (Brittany) Ferry you're getting here's a tip - watch the times that the restaurants close onboard - 1.30pm (UK time) which seemed unreasonably early and we missed eating because of that - had to hang on until 5pm until the self-service cafeteria re-opened. Dr_DoGood: Yes it is Brittany Ferries, I'll have to watch out for that! Thanks!
The hotel in Dinan sounds like a great deal, but I think we'd like to be as close as possible as we'll be travelling a lot in the days before. |
You could also check out hotels in Dinard, just across the bay from St-Malo. It's a pleasant old resort town with a number of large (think Victorian)hotels dominating the cliffs. We liked it much more than St-Malo.
