We spent one night at the Hotel American this past April, because it is right next to the Alhambra (as well as next to the Parador). The hotel itself is funky and our room was small and simply furnished, although there is a pleasant garden in the back where you can have a drink- there are a number of tables with chairs there on the shady patio. The front desk was very nice and accomodating. The hotel itself doesn't have a lot to recommend it except for its' location and old-timey atmosphere.
BUT: It was fabulous to be so close to the Alhambra- the main reason for our stop in Granada. We ended up taking an evening tour of the Alhambra in addition to the daytime one we'd booked in advance ( I highly recommend doing this- it is quite magical to see it at night, and you take away a completely different experience from seeing it in the daytime). We were able to just buy tickets for the evening entrance on the same day we were there.
We also walked into the city of Granada itself for dinner and had a great dinner at Oliver's ( we took a cab back up to the Hotel America instead of hiking up the hill in the dark).
I would highly recommend the America if your main purpose is to visit the Alhambra, you're not staying long, and you don't want to spend the VERY high price at the Granada parador.
