Check out Hotel Osuna. It has a free airport shuttle that takes you there in 10 minutes.
The Hotel looks a bit dreary if you get there at night, it has a certain motelish look to it, but the rooms are great and it is very quiet, located in a residential area by the airport, surrounded by gardens.
It's usually available for one coupon with the Bancotel system at www.bancotel.com or with cheap rates through Expedia.

Olga and Maira - muchas gracias por su repuestas. I'm checking into rates and availability. Maira, do you know how close Hotel Atlantico is to the airport (mas o menos)?
We're going to have a rental car and we're thinking of dropping off the car the night before we leave, then going to the hotel and using the shuttle to go to the airport in the morning. I have to call AutoEurope and see if there's any chance we could return the car at Hotel Osuna since its website says it has its own car rental. We're trying to simplify our departure.
Thanks again for your assistance.

The airport is about 40 minutes from the Hotel Atlantico, this includes the early morning traffic, etc. For better estimates tell the hotel your departure time and ask at which time you should leave the hotel. Hotel Atlantico is located in Gran Via, walking distance to Puerta del Sol, Plaza Mayor, etc..., the rooms were surprisingly quiet. Que disfrutes España!!

gailw,
If the Hotel Osuna doesn't work out for you for some reason, and you don't want to take a 40 min. shuttle ride from Barajas into the heart of downtown Madrid for that night, you might want to consider these 2 others near the airport:
the "Best Western Villa de Barajas", with 24 hr. free shuttle. On the Best Western site they offer a corporate rate of 107 (2 twin beds) and a leisure rate of 118, including full brk. There's also an AARP rate.
Or 2 km. away, there's the newish NH Express Barajas, similar to a Holiday Inn Express. It has no garden or free shuttle but a taxi shouldn't be more than 10 euros, including the 4 euro supplement, since it's that close. It has a promo rate of 75 euros (but no free brkf.), a wkd. rate of 83, and corporate rate of 87, and you can book at
http:nh-hotels.worldres.com
The rack rates at some of the hotels in the airport vicinity can actually be quite expensive, catering to the business/expense account trade, unless you happen to have a single bancotel voucher to use for a weekend, as Olga says, or snag an internet special.
The NH, the Tryp Diana and Sofitel airport properties accept a 50 euro bancotel voucher on wkds, but not mid-week, except for July/Aug/Xmas.
Utell.com has a late getaway rate of 80 euros for the Osuna but not available for all dates.
Hope this helps a bit.
