Need Help....trains from Munich to Perlach

We are going on first trip to Germany to do a Danube river cruise...will be staying at the Golden Leaf Hotel Perlach Allee located at Therese-Giehse Allee 76, D-81739 in Munich. I understand that this hotel is about 1 hour from the airport and we want to take the train to the hotel. And we want to also take the train into the city center since we will be here at this hotel for 3 days.... Do any Fodorites out there have detailed info the which trains to the hotel and do we have to change trains enroute to the hotel from the airport? Also, when we reach the last stop, do you know how far it is to the hotel? We will have our luggage and hope there is no rain! Also, from the hotel to city center is supposed to be a shorter distance, but still would like some info...we were considering a taxi from airport to hotel but the cost is $90 each way....thanks

If you look on this website, http://www.mvv-muenchen.de/web4archi...07englisch.pdf, you should be able to figure it out. It looks to me like you would take the S8 from the airport to Ostbahnhof (which I think is the 8th stop) then change to either S6 or U5. I think you need the stop Neuperlach-Sud. On the U5 it should be the end stop. On the S6 it is not the end, you can see from the map.

You should check for sure with the hotel if the right station is the Neuperlach-Sud. I got this from mapping it on the following site, which you can also do, http://www.booking.com/hotel/de/perl...27&lang=en

Going into Munich from there is less complicated, because both the S6 and the U5 go directly into the center.

Hope this helps -- I'm not from there but do try to figure these things out for myself.

Hope you are traveling light! Altho it looks like the walk to the hotel is only 3-5-10 minutes, depending on which site you read.

Kristinelane, Do you know if we can purchase tickets for s bahn and u5 at the same time at the airport...or do we need to purchase s bahn, change at the stop and purchase next leg of the trip there at the u5 station? What is the price for a trip this long? thanks

There are no separate tickets for S-Bahn and U-Bahn. All tickets are zone to zone tickets regardless which transportation you take and how many changes you make. You simply buy a ticket from airport into Munich.

I'm not sure how much it is -- but as I recall it's not just a few euros. Since it is a ways out of the city, it might be more like 7 or 8 euro. Someone else can maybe help with this. Also I found a reasonably helpful website about the transportation system that you might want to look at: http://europeforvisitors.com/munich/...ahn-s-bahn.htm
Hope you have a great trip.

Don't know for how long the link to the map is valid.
From the Airport, take the S8 exit at Ostbahnhof, if you enter at one of the first cars, you'll only have a very short walk to the U-Bahn (underground) platform, from where you can use the U5.

Don't expect a very nice surrounding at Neuperlach. It's one of 2 Munich "problem areas" many of the poorest people of Munich are living there.
Nevertheless, shopping is quite good at the PEP mall.

logos999....what do you mean by "problem area".....is there a high crime rate???? We had researched for hotels closer in city but there were several festivals and most places didn't have vacancies....We had read some good reviews about the hotel and area....now you have me concerned since we will be there for three days and wanted to do some sightseeing in and around Munich....using the trains and u-bahn of course. We have a no refund policy with the hotel ....so we can't cancel without losing our money and rebooking? Is it bad enough that we should do that?

No need to worry! The area around Neuperlach U-Bahn (PEP) is not very nice, should you ever run into problems with "immigrant" youth (at night), it will be there.

Crime rate there is the highest in Munich, however! it's generally low in Munich compared to other towns.

Nobody here would want to live in Neuperlach anyway because it's just ugly.

You'll be staying in Neuperlach Süd, close to the U-Bahn, it's o.k there.

I just wouldn't want to wander around alone at the Neuperlach station at night.

There at the McDonalds is the place where the junkies meet, since quite a few get their methadon from the doctors there.

You never know with those people.

We are considering now staying in Nuremburg for the three days prior to our river cruise from that port...can we take the train from Munich airport straight to Nuremburg? Do we change trains? How far? Also, what hoels in nice areas near the port do you recommend? Thanks

As replied in your other post.
- change trains at Munich central station.
- 1h from central station on ICE trains
- 1h30 on local trains
