This past May we used Romashuttle.com for a private car and the cost was 45 euro. Roninrome recommended this service and it was worth every euro. The driver met us outside of the FCO frosted customs exit doors and was holding a sign with our last name. It was easy, easy. After years of using Leonardo, this was definitely worth the price.
My wife seems to attract the attention of an ethic minority of women interested only in picking her pocket, so using this service is a no-brainer for us.
Buon viaggio,

To even reach anywhere near there by taking the local train instead of the Leonardo would require a train change and then still transferring to the metro to get the rest of the way or a taxi.>
I don't think so - take the regional airport trains to Ostiense and change to metro there or to Tiburtina station and change tom metro there - no extra change of train.
But I agree airport shuttles with luggage is the best if not cheapest way to go - cheapest is not always the best.

Palenq, the FL1 train is not useful for getting to the Vatican area. Ostiense and Tiburtina stations are on the B line, while the Vatican is on the A line. Changing metro lines at Termini station would be eve worse than changing trains.
At Trastevere station, you can change from the FL1 to the FL5 and get off at San Pietro station, which would be convenient for some parts of the Vatican area. However, it would be of no use for Via Candia. As I said, the Vatican is a large area.

I believe Tuscolana station is at least a few blocks from the metro station, which isn't in the same building.
I think that the SIT bus, which both kybourbon and I have recommended, would be the best solution other than a private transfer service or taxi. Since the prices are virtually the same, I would prefer the private transfer service.

Oh my goodness!! Thank-you you all so much for weighing in on our travel plans. I have not been able to attend to this since I posted, but I so appreciate your help. I think I am going to look into a private transfer. Thanks again!

You can chose http://www.car-executive.com/ . They're punctual, excellent service, new car (Mercedes) and the price is reasonable. You can book online all transfer to/from Airport.
