Need help with train station in Derbyshire
We will be staying in Bakewell for 3 days, but we need to return our rental car before heading back to London.
Is Chesterfield the only train station in Derbyshire? We will be returning our car to either the National(Beckett Street) or Europcar(Perkins Industrial), which are both located in downtown Derbyshire. Using the michelin map, it seems that it is a 35 minute drive from downtown derbyshire to the Chesterfield train station - is this correct? Is their a closer train station to downtown Derbyshire? |
Derbyshire is the name of the county. The county seat is called Derby. Those rental car locations are in Derby.
Direct trains operated by Midland Mainline trains go to London St Pancras every 30 minutes, every :04 and :34, and takes 1:47 or 2:00. www.nationalrail.co.uk |
lots of details about these locations on your other thread
http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...p;tid=34932149 (As rkkwan says - no such a thing as "downtown Derbyshire" ) |
Sorry guys, I meant to write "downtown derby". My main question was is the Chesterfield the closest train station from downtown derby?
|
Chesterfield is a different city altogether. Chesterfield is at least 25 miles from central Derby.
Why are you even asking about Chesterfield if you need to return the car in Derby? Return it in Derby and take the train from there (and check out the info on your other thread) |
And maybe pick up a map of Derbyshire (or google for one on line) so you can see where these places are.

janisj,
I looked at the other thread, but I my original question was more about the rental car dropoff location. When looking up train information,I would put Derby in as the point of departure. Both Virgin and Midland Mainline list "chesterfield" as the train station they use - do you know of other train companies that actually leave out of derby? |
I don't know what do you mean by that last statement.
If you search for trains "Derby" to "London", both www.midlandmainland.com and www.nationalrail.co.uk will give you the same trains - those that goes from Derby to London. I don't even know how Chesterfield can come into it. Derby is the town where you drop off your car and where you take the train. Every half an hour, people take direct trains from Derby to London; plus other trains to other destination. It is a fairly large town with a train station with frequent train service between London and Sheffield. In fact, if you look at the route map of Midland Mainline, it's one of the 5 principal stations of that train company. |
Yes, but why are you in Derby anyway? It's about as charmless as anywhere outside Pitesti, Romania. Chesterfield's the handiest station for Bakewell, and is handier for Matlock. Also check whether there's a dropoff near Alfreton and Mansfield Parkway station.

I think the only drop off points Anna was offered by AutoEurope were the two in Derby. At least that is what I understood from her previous posts. But then again, maybe she asked for a drop off there . . . .

This might help
http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/tocs_m..._rail_maps.htm National rail should give you an overview before you worry if you use Virgin (not my favorite) or any other |
