Need help with this forum, please

Earlier I tried to post a reply on a Paris thread.

I typed my message & hit the "Preview" key. Instead of seeing my message, the screen went to full page showing the entire thread...including my message at the bottom.

But it wasn't really there. I logged out and logged back in and went to that thread and my message isn't there. And the very same thing happens if I try to post to that thread (other threads work OK).

What have I done??!

it's happened to me too, tho I have no explanation for you. This cyber world never fails to baffle me.

Scarlett Jun 8th, 2003 07:03 PM

After you preview your reply, click on post your reply and that will really be on the thread. You only viewed a preview, you did not actually post it :)

I'm not sure exactly because I dn't think it's happened to me exactly that way. However, I can tell you that for some reasons I don't quite know (server problems or traffic on Fodors), sometimes a post just will not "take" regardless of what you do. And sometimes it happens on one particular thread and not others you may try to post to around the same time. It could be random, but my experience is that this frequently happens on Sunday mornings especially. I think maybe Fodors does something to the board on Sundays, work on it or whatever, that makes it less available on the server. All I know is that the same thing happened to me this morning on one particular thread on the US board -- I tried to post a response about 6 times and it simply would not post on one particular thread. If it's really a long post, sometimes that can be the reason, but in my case, it wasn't any longer than some others and cutting it didn't help.

So, my only advice is to try again the next day, and often it will work. That isn't exactly the same situation as yours, I get a screen that you can tell it didn't work, but I wasn't trying the Preview function so I don't know what would happen in that case, maybe what you saw.

Once in a while, Fodors closes a thread to new responses if they don't want it to continue (usually if they consider it too contentious or controversial), but you can tell that because the "post my reply" button is missing. Also, occasionally if you try to post exactly when Fodors is doing that to a thread or pulling it from the board, weird things will happen. Or, if you try to post at the exact same time that someone else is.

I just tried again on that thread...same problem.

Scarlet, it's not giving me the option to post...there's no "post" or "edit" button at the bottom.

Would one of you go to that thread and see if you can post to it? It's in "Europe--France" and search under "More Paris off"....that will bring it up. It was created by JMVikarnis or something like that.

Scarlett Jun 8th, 2003 07:59 PM

ok, when you are posting, it says preview on the left and post on the right. when I hit preview, it is the same, preview on the left, edit in the middle, post on the right. I edit or post. It topped so it is working.

JeanneB Jun 8th, 2003 08:02 PM

Thanks, Scarlett. I see your post over there.

I tried again, but it still won't bring up the "post a reply" page for me. All I get is a wide-screen page with the whole thread on it, no buttons at the bottom. Must be a bug.

I'll try again tomorrow. G'night!

Just so you know, I still can't post to that one thread.

Veddddy Inneresting!

cigalechanta Jun 9th, 2003 06:29 AM

Jeanne have you been able to access? Maybe today others could help.

JeanneB Jun 9th, 2003 07:47 AM

I'm able to post on all threads but that one. I can't understand what's happened. I've "moved on". :(

janis Jun 9th, 2003 07:52 AM

Maybe that thread has been "closed" - has anyone else posted on it while you have been having problems? If not - it may have been cut off for some reason.

suze Jun 9th, 2003 10:27 AM

I had similar problems yesterday 6/8, and I post frequently on this board without difficulties.

JeanneB Jun 9th, 2003 10:34 AM

janis,

I don't think the thread us closed or otherwise restricted. Scarlett was able to post on it after I reported my problem last night.

I'm at a different computer now, but still cannot post on that one thread:
http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...p;tid=34423816

Now Suze says she had the same problem....could be VERY confusing for a newcomer to this forum. Is there some way to contact the administrator of these forums?

rex Jun 9th, 2003 03:26 PM

You can write to [email protected]

But I cannot duplicate the problem posting to that thread.

Best wishes,

Rex

Jeanne,
I posted, and edited on there just now for you. It must be something with your server/computer? Oh well, post your own thread with your answer :)

JeanneB Jun 10th, 2003 03:35 AM

I see all the "testing" posts on that thread...thanks to all of you for your efforts.

Maybe one of you could post it for me. My email is [email protected]

If you'll email me yours I'll send you the message I wanted to post. Thanks

ira Jun 10th, 2003 04:08 AM

Hi Jeanne,

Why not just post a new message?

JeanneB Jun 10th, 2003 05:05 AM

This really is getting ridiculous, isn't it? I'm not going to take up the whole forum's time with a post just for this. I'll just watch for him posting again on the subject and let him know then.

JeanneB Jun 10th, 2003 10:38 AM

Thanks to Steve who copied, pasted and posted my message on that thread. And thanks to all of you who tried to help me!

Time to put this thread to rest.
