Need help with the South of France
My brother, knowing I spend way too much time on Fodor's, has asked me to try to get some info for him. This is what he asked me to ask you:
We are arriving in Avignon Wed afternoon then driving to Vaison la Romaine and staying two nights there. We want to drive over Mont Ventoux to the Luberon then spend a night in the Luberon area Friday night. We will then drive back to Avignon to catch the train to Nice. We can't figure out where to stay in the Luberon area.
He (and I!) would very much appreciate any advice you have to offer.

Sault (and nearby Aurel) are in a beautiful location (though geographically not yet in Luberon).

Even if you just drive through Sault (which you can hardly avoid, coming from Mt Ventoux), stop in the town center to get some of the famous nougat from Boyer.

My take:
Apt -- no need to go quite so far east.
Lourmarin: Pretty but the road to it (via Bonnieux) is pretty tortuous.
Gordes, Bonnieux, Menerbes, Oppede-le-Vieux -- are all close together, all in the very top rank of Luberon towns. All are close to the main road back to Avignon.
No-one has yet mentioned Rousillon so I will -- just to say "don't". My personal view, is all.
If you choose a destination, people can recommend accommodation. (Mas les trois sources, Bonnieux? Ferme de la Huppe, near Gordes?)
Vaison reastaurant recommendation: Bistro du'O. Very smart, very good.
Lots of other good places too, of course.

But these people are coming across the Mont Ventoux, visiting the Luberon and then spending the night. IE: They're coming from the north -- You were coming from the west, I believe.
From the Luberon, there MAY be other routes than the one I have driven -- most recently in October -- that brings you through a series of limestone gorges. More twists than a licorice rope.
It's a bewitching drive ... but if I wanted to maximize my time in the Luberon, I would not choose somewhere so cut off from the Luberon towns.
