Need help with Rome and Venice B & Bs
 

Hi Everyone

I've been in the midst of researching our Italy trip for this upcoming summer 2004 and I'd like to find some nice accommodations with a daily rate of between 140 and 160 euros for a quad room in both Venice and Rome. Can anyone recommend a place where they've stayed or know about?

Start at www.eurocheapo.com - - there are several places listed there which hav been carefully scrutinized, and not just picked for low price - - and several have "B&B", right in their names.

venere.com is a good site to check availability and prices. Just plug in your dates, # of persons, and how many rooms you want and it will show you whats available. They also have a place to read reviews of previous guests.

I forgot to add the names of the places we're staying. We are a family of 4 and have a quad room booked at Daphne B&B in Rome. It seems to get mixed reviews. The negative ones seem to come from people who have had to switch rooms during their stay. I have been guaranteed this will not happen to us. We will see. In Venice my husband and I stayed last year at what is called a Town House Suite on the Venere site. The name of the place is called Locanda Ca'Amadi. We liked it so much that this is where we will be staying while in Venice this year. We had a huge suite which could accomodate 4 plus had a view of a canal. It was beautiful. Price very reasonable at 145euros for the 4 of us.

If you're staying at Daphne B&B don't leave your bags with them! We asked if we could leave our bags at Daphne because we had to check out but our train to Florence wasn't until 6 that night. They said sure, no problem. We came back to Daphne and the building's main door was open and THE DOOR TO DAPHNE WAS PROPPED OPEN WITH OUR LUGGAGE! Anyone could have walked in from the street and taken our bags. There was no one in Daphne and we waited 5 minutes before Alex, the owner appeared. He said he ran to the basement to take of something and didn't want to lock the door. He acted like it was no big deal. We were pissed and didn't even receive an apology!

I wish they refused to let us leave our bags if they were going leave our bags open to everyone of Rome.

Plus, Daphne's rates are usually overpriced. Seasoned travelers know where the deals are (we found out too late!) and can save themselves about $50 a night.

Message: I can recommend an apartment we stayed at in Venice last October called Gli Angeli. Its a B&B and the wonderful owner, Sonia, lives upstairs. It was really (really!) a great deal, I can't say enough good things about it. It sleeps four comfortably with a king (or two twins) in the main room and a separate small bedroom with two twin beds. It also has a fully equipped kitchen a backyard and is about a ten minute walk from San Marco. We paid cash and she charged us 130 Euros per night. Message: Since you will have kids with you, have you thought about staying in an apartment, rather than a hotel? Sometimes they are more affordable for many reasons, and you would have more room to spread out with your family.

Message: We were in Italy with kids (10 & 12) in March '01. We stayed in quad/family rooms in:
Rome - Santa Chiara 3* - this was a 2 room suite. Our bedroom was facing a busy street. With the window opened (we hit a hot-spell and the bldg a/c wasn't on yet) the noise was troublesome. The breakfast buffet here was the best of the 3.
Florence - Hotel Casci 2* - the decor isn't as charming as some but the family that run it are delightful. We had one large room, very quiet.

Venice - Hotel FLora 3* - this was the most charming of all. Also 1 large room, but 1 1/2 baths. There also is a lovely garden here where we enjoyed taking an afternoon break.

Be aware that Daphne B&B only gives you fresh towels every 3-4 days. This is extremely unhygentic and no matter what they tell you, it is not common practice in Italy.
