If going to Edinburgh and back and not doing the restrictive online route where you can nab really cheap tickets like TimS says and want flexilibity then consider the BritRail pass - not only for UK travel but also this pass would qualify you for a passholder fare on Eurostar to Paris - as low at $77 one way - but again must reserve far in advance to get this fare and the fare is tiered and can cost much more.
A 4-day Brit Flexipass could also be used for Windsor and from either airport - not huge fares but if you are not using the other 4 days a factor - good on all trains in UK, including pricey Heathrow Express and Gatwick Express.
But pass makes sense probably only if you can't get the sometimes elusive online dirt-cheap special fares and can cope with the non-changeability, non-refundability of such fares.
I'd take the Kings X to Edinburgh 4.5 hour trip one way in the daytime because it's so scenic - well the part from York to Edinburgh is as it often hugs a gorgeous coast.
