Need Help with planning 5-Day trip in Bavaria
 

A friend and I are planning to visit Bavaria for five days (mid-June) before heading to Florence, Italy for a wedding. I'm interested in seeing castles, quaint towns, nice scenery, etc. Any suggestions for what places we should see? Any must-see's?

Well, there are certainly plenty of castles and palaces in Bavaria. In Munich itself is the Nymphenburg Palace and the Residenz Palace.

"Mad King Ludwig", Ludwig II of Bavaria built a number of palaces worth seeing, Herrenchiemnsee, S.E. of Munich and the more famous Neuschwanstein and Linderhof, southwest of Munich. The ultimate medieval town in Germany is Rothenburg ob der Tauber, to the N.W. of Munich.

Also in Munich is a must-see (unless you don't drink beer), the beerhall and beergarden, the Hofbrau House.

It so difficult trying to make specific recs when we have so little info about you.

I have been doing more than my usual research about Bavaria since I'll be in Bavaria from May 23rd to July 19th.

Most of my things will have to do with visiting out of the way towns and places. Most of my things will include adult beverages while taking in the beauty of Bavaria and the Alps down along the German and Austrian borders. I'll be concentrating on places that are not typical tourist places, in fact I want to go where most Americans don't go.

I lived in Germany for two years and agree with the suggestion of Iphofen (an entirely walled city-with few tourists) and Bamburg. Would not miss Rothenburg(even though it IS touristy) or Dinkelsbuhl.These cities are all within the area of Franconia (upper Bavaria) Also,the area around Munich, including Neuschwanstein, Linderhof and the area of Fussen in southern Bavaria-scenery is breathtaking.
