Need help with Italian itinerary
I am flying in to Venice(3 nights) and out of Rome (5 nights).
In between I have 8 days (7 nights).
Of course, I want to see more than I have time for!
I would like to see Florence, experience Tuscany - incl. the leaning tower, San Gimignano, Orvieto - and visit Naples/Pompeii.
Can anyone suggest a sensible itinerary?

Hi Jay - You could easily spend a week experiencing Tuscany. Where else do you want to visit there?
Do you also want to visit other places in the Naples area - Amalfi Coast, Capri, Paestum etc?
If yes, I suggest you split the time evenly - 4 days Florence-based, with day-trips to:
- San Gimignano/Siena
- Orvieto (& Cortona? )
- Pisa/Lucca
... and 4 days Campania-based.
Hope this helps ...

We like moving around a lot more than many people on this board, and even we managed to spend 6 or 7 nights in Florence-Tuscany (plus another 3 nights on the Cinque Terre.) We spent another 5 nights in the Sorrento-Pompeii-Amalfi Coast area.
So I suggest concentrating on Tuscany (it is more logically situated for your itinerary) and if your heart is set on Pompeii, people have managed it as a day trip from Rome. Buono viaggi (sorry, Italian is already rusty again..)

Hi J,
Orvieto is only 1 hr from Rome. I would make it a daytrip from there.
Siena and San Gim are easy daytrips from Florence. Why not plan 4 nights in Florence?
If you will have a car, you can tour Tuscany.
If not, you could visit the CT or the Amalfi Coast.
Enjoy your visit.

Everybody has their preferences but I like staying in different places instead of doing day trips. So I would do 3 nights in Florence or 4 if you are an art lover. From there divide your time between Pisa and San G. You can see Orvieto on your drive down to Rome. I would take the train from Venice to Florence and then rent a car as you are leaving Florence and drop it off when you arrive in Rome.
Naples is not as much of a destination as other places in Italy although Pompei is interesting. I would save that for another trip when you can add on the Amalfi Coast.
Have a great time.
