Need Help with cell phones in Spain.
My daughter is taking a semester abroad in Barcelona. She is required to have a cell phone. Renting the phone and then paying 49 cents p/min to US, 29 cents in Spain is so high. This is the deal the cell phone store gave her. Is there a better way? I feel they may have taken advantage of a new arrival? Thanks.

I'm not sure how favorably they would compare, but you might want to check out the Piccell website. They have arrangements especially for students, and the company itself was created by a guy who'd been a student in Italy for a year and was tired of being ripped off by the high rates he was paying in Italy.

I just moved to Madrid not too long ago and i simply bought a prepaid phonecard through Vodafone plus phone (49 euro), all though the rates are not great, i have people calling me back most of the times. Also i use calling cards as often as i can (which are the cheapest) i use them on regular pay phones and when i can get ahold of a regular house phone.I am very happy with this Vodafone company, also you can check out Movistar and Amena who are similar companies- with amena you can send and recieve text messages to the usa, with this vodafone i can send to all USA cell phones but only recieve from Verizon and AT&T!
Hope it helped a little bit...

As already suggested, your daughter can pick up a pre-paid phone service when she arrives in Spain for both in-country and international use. She can also purchase a calling card for phoning back to the States which is very inexpensive but has it's limits. I suggest that you check out "On Spanish Time" (http://www.onspanishtime.com/web/index.htm) regarding both purchasing a new phone and service (pre-paid) and phone card.

as already wisely stated, there are so many cell phone deals in spain with prepaid cards, plus then all the types of calling cards to be used from fixed land lines, ( 6 euros for 250 minutes!!) that i would just leave it til she gets here.
the shops are on every corner. probably can get an O.K. phone for 59-89 euros with some free minutes on pre-paid card.
however.. calling on cell phones is expensive no matter WHAT system you use. but contrary to USA, the receiver of the call does NOT pay unless he is in a country different than the one he first registered the phone in.
