Need help with an itinerary

Two friends and I are planning a senior trip to Greece, we want to go to Athens and tour around a bit, and stay in a safe hostel. We also want to make a circle around the Cyclades islands, Mykonos being a top priority, Santorini as well.

We are going to stay in hostels for the entire trip (3 weeks).

Does anyone have any advice about traveling to and from each island, how much time to spend on each island, and where to go as far as hostels, restaurants, nightlife, etc...

Your help is extremely appreciated!

You might try EasyCruise. They are a hostel type cruise ship that travels among the islands.

It is easy to organize such a trip on your own. Hostels are unnecessary, as on each island there are many small, family-run hotels (domatia), that offer rooms at reasonable rates. You might also consider looking for apartments where the three of you could all stay together and save on the price of individual rooms.

Before giving specific advice, it would be helpful to know when you will be travelling (May is very different from August, for example). Also, what sort of things are you interested in: ancient sites, scenery, hiking, beaches, good restaurants, nightlife?

i've heard to book in advance, i'm not sure i feel comfortable just traveling to the islands without a firm itinerary as far as a place to stay goes.

we are planning to go mid June and stay for 3 weeks...

My friends and I are interested in basically everything mentioned. Nightlife and great beaches especially. We would like to experience some history and culture as well though

thank you for your suggestions!

Three weeks from the middle of June sounds pretty good to me. You will have plenty of time to see the sights on both mainland and islands.

To get started on your planning, bone up a little bit on Greece and the islands to give you basic idea of what you would like to see. There are many good threads here on Fodor's, other websites such as Matt Barrett's http://www.greektravel.com/, and lots of guidebooks which you can find in your library or bookstore.

Some ideas for the mainland: Peloponnese, Delphi, Meteora; for the islands: Mykonos, Naxos, Paros, Santorini, Folegandros, Sifnos; then the last few days around Athens for your trip home. You won't have time to do all the islands I mentioned, but they are popular choices from which to pick - there are many others.

If you don't want to do all the planning yourself, you can enlist the help of a Greek travel agent. Three of them were mentioned on another Fodor's thread I was reading a few minutes ago.
