The Hotel Bramante was very near St. Peter's Square and the Vatican. A little hard to find on your own but our cabbie had no trouble finding it. We booked through Venere.com but had the good luck to have a recommendation from my daughter and her husband who had stayed there the month before our trip. The service was helpful and friendly and the breakfast very good. Being near St. Peter's Sq. made catching the occasional cab to or from more distant sights very convenient. We would either take a cab to our chosen sight and walk back seeing the places along the way, or walk to sights and take a cab back to the square when we got tired. Hope you have a good time!

We stayed at the Hotel Alimandi which is half a block from the entrance to the Vatican Museum. The hotel rooms are very basic, but clean, and their buffet breakfast (included in price) was wonderful. Sorry but I don't know anything about the Leonardo da Vinci.

We stayed at and enjoyed the Hotel Spring House, literally around the corner from the entrance to the Vatican museum. Staff was terrific, rooms were spacious, modern and sparkling clean. Neighborhood was nice to stroll around and enjoy some pasta al fresco at a locl trattoria. Rates were quite good, too. www.springhousehotelrome.it

Personally, I would stay over on the other side of the Tiber and just visit the Vatican the days you need to be there. The area does not let you experience the various sights, sounds and great restaurants that are so prevalent in the main areas. The area around the Vatican is pretty dead in relation to walking to ancient ruins or grabbing a fabulous meal, shopping or a gelato in the areas such as Piazza Navona, the ancient center,Trastevere,or the Northeast area.
