need help w. time sensitive response re: amsterdam layover
supposing one arrives in amsterdam airport at 11.30am sunday morning...connection flight departs at 7.30pm - is there time enough to do anything in amsterdam sunday afternoon? thanks in advance for your quick reply...jfm.

Its a quick twenty minute train ride from the airport to Amsterdam's central train station, and trains leave frequently. We had a four hour layover and went into Amsterdam for about an hour and a half and still had lots of time to spare. You could easily train into Amsterdam for the day...there is plenty to see and do. Consider taking a boat ride on the canals.

I have done this in the past whenever I have had at least a 5 hr window between flights. On the last connection through Amsterdam, we dropped off our bags in a locker next to the gate where we were scheduled to depart from and then immediately headed down to the area to catch the train into Centraal station (approx. 20 min ride). Just give yourself a cushion of time to return in time to retrieve your luggage AND REMEMBER to check if the departure gate is the same or has changed.

Wander the streets around Dam Square, visit Anne Frank's hiding place www.annefrank.org also Van Gogh museum www.vangoghmuseum.nl, lots going on with Rembrandt's 400th birthday. Take advantage of those few hours. Canal boat ride gives quick layout and history. Amsterdam is great!

Very dooable, but arrive at the airport in plenty of time for your second flight. You go through security twoice at Schiphol, once just past the ticket counters and again at the gate.

Oops, that should read twice. I wish you could correct embarassing goofs in Fodors threads.
